Mr Peacock's Possessions
Mr Peacock's Possessions | Lydia Syson
3 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Oceania 1879. A family of settlers from New Zealand are the sole inhabitants of a remote volcanic island. For two years they have struggled with the harsh reality of trying to make this unforgiving place a paradise they can call their own. At last, a ship appears. The six Pacific Islanders on board have travelled eight hundred miles across the ocean in search of work and new horizons. Hopes are high for all, until a vulnerable boy vanishes. In their search for the lost child, settlers and newcomers together uncover far more than they were looking for. The island's secrets force them all to question their deepest convictions. An intimate, intense and beautifully realised novel of possession, power and the liberating loss of innocence, this will delight fans of MISTER PIP and THE POISONWOOD BIBLE. Praise for the novels of Lydia Syson: 'Beautifully written' Guardian 'Syson brings history alive' Observer 'The writing is powerful, the events terrifying' Bookbag 'Compelling story of politics, passion, bravery and love' BookTrust

Mehso-so

Being generous with a So-So because I didn't really enjoy this one that much. The writing is fine, but the pacing is way off - it takes ages to get going - it's just not very exciting/intriguing & I didn't engage. The plot is slow, sometimes going nowhere in an over-wordy manner while my meagre interest depleted. The structure also confuses the chronology. It improves slightly around 80% but that's too little too late for me. Was mostly bored.

Starting this one on this snowy day in Yorkshire's East Riding. Have you got snow where you are? Is it just me or does reading on a snowy day have an extra level of enjoyment?

Balibee146 Nice....ideal conditions to curl up with a book. This looks interesting so looking forward to what you think of it. No snow here in Central Scotland... Very cold and very sunny. 2y
inthegreensandblues Snowy day reading is wonderful! 2y

Pickpick

Part Swiss family Robinson, part Von trapp, part whodunnit.... This is a tale all about the outsider. The daughter who will never been viewed with equal value to her brother. The young man who finds it difficult to embrace a religion his brother preaches. The wanderer who is searching for home, at all costs. Slow going in the beginning, but full of rich detail and a satisfying conclusion.
