This Wound is a World
This Wound is a World: Poems | Billy-Ray Belcourt
8 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
"Part manifesto, part memoir, This Wound is a World is an invitation to 'cut a hole in the sky to world inside.' Billy-Ray Belcourt issues a call to turn to love and sex to understand how Indigenous peoples shoulder sadness and pain like theirs without giving up on the future. His poems and essays upset genre and play with form, scavenging for a decolonial kind of heaven where 'everyone is at least a little gay.'"--

Pickpick

A beautiful collection of poetry highlighting Indigenous issues in Alberta. Containing themes such as identity, family and grief, Belcourt weaves a somewhat autobiographical account of his life. If you like prose form poetry you will definitely like this book. As this is a collection of poetry, Belcourt switches between first person and third person limited narration depending on the pronoun use in his poem.

"i am trying to figure out how to be in the world without wanting it. this, perhaps, is what it means to be native." Billy-Ray Belcourt will be at #emwf18 to read from his breathtaking poetry collection, This Wound is a World, which turns to love and sex to understand how Indigenous peoples shoulder sadness and pain without giving up on the future. bit.ly/2yJSQdJ #canlit #poetry #griffinpoetryprize #indigenous

I started taking photos of my favourite poems in this collection, but I soon realized that it was pointless because I was taking photos of nearly every one. If I had to pick a favourite though, I think I would go with “God‘s River”. This is an incredibly powerful collection of poetry, and it‘s no wonder it won the 2018 Griffin Poetry Prize. I can‘t wait to meet Billy-Ray Belcourt at #emwf18 @EMWF #canlit #poetry

One of the best poetry collections I have read so far this year. Emotional and academic thought blend perfectly here. Highly recommended.

TOWARDS A THEORY OF DECOLONIZATION

1. forget everything you‘ve learned about love.

2. investment is the social practice whereby one risks losing it all to be part of something that feels like release. lose everything with me.

3. indian time is a form of time travel. a poetics of lateness.

4. i never liked goodbyes, but some of us aren‘t here to stay.

tournevis This person is amazing. I don't know which pronoun to use, I've seen several, but amazing right there! 7y
tournevis Which reminds me, did you hear about her? I'be been reading her for the last few years and she just released a novel. Tagged is translated poetry. https://youtu.be/4cbGU49XGdc 7y
Lindy @tournevis Billy-Ray was using the pronoun he at his performances in Edmonton over the past 6 months. I have heard of Natasha Kanapé Fontaine because she was in Edmonton in March, but I was away then so I didn‘t attend. Thanks for the link. ? 7y
