A fascinating, affirming read.Topics include the placenta, drug/alcohol guidelines, breastfeeding, labour/birth support, and the exchange of fetal and maternal cells. Garbes's own experiences are woven throughout. The argument is information should be available so women (using that deliberately) can make their own decisions. YES! Unfortunately there is a weird inconsistent mix of inclusive (pregnant people) and exclusive (mother's milk) language.
"From a very young age, we teach our children to be awed by the changes in the natural world. Can we ever see our own changes with the same generosity and wonder?"
"I had been exposed for the beast I truly was; my primary concern was enduring."
It felt appropriate to start this book while rocking my sleeping baby at 6am after being up with her half the night. She does not want to be put down, she wants to be snuggled! 👼💖
Absolutely fascinating, inspiring, and beautiful.
Today is my husband's first day back at work from paternity leave and my baby's first day at daycare. We're doing some trial days to work out the kinks before I go back to work. So...mall walk and coffee with a friend, and then a much-needed naptime! Using this for my Store Sign Square on #LitsyWalkers Bingo!

I'm reading in bits and pieces but not consistently yet...I promise to try and make more actual book posts soon!
I've been busy with family stuff all day and only have 48 more minutes of reading from this morning, when I pulled this book out for a bit. This section really resonated with me. #24B4Monday

Today's reading plans! I might also fit some audio booking in, since I need to finish hanging baby clothes, do laundry, and pack a hospital bag...
I stepped away from this one for a bit but am coming back to it now. Not sure if I have time to finish before the little one comes, but knowledge makes me feel better about my aches and pains!

This book is unapologetically feminist; empowering without being sanctimonious; and candid about the realities of pregnancy, birth and motherhood without without making me more anxious than I already am about the toll that they take on the mind and body. I‘m coming away from it with a better understanding of my own body and a sense of confidence that I‘ll be better equipped to advocate for myself as I navigate post-partum life and new motherhood.
I‘ve been struggling with a lot of the rhetoric around pregnancy and what the expectations are versus how I feel (generally, like a human Petri dish). This book was a great read for facts around the experience but also a commentary on how some of those expectations are just silly. Definitely recommended even if you haven‘t been pregnant in ages or never plan to be.
There were a few passages where I would have preferred a less strident tone. I definitely agree with much of what she writes here; I just didn‘t need for example to have dates repeated in a “I can‘t believe we only figured this out in the 1990s” sort of way. However, overall a pick for me, especially the part about the placenta which was particularly interesting. #LitsyAtoZ2018
Wish I could disagree but I can‘t.
Y'ALL. I am starting my journey around pregnancy and motherhood (not pregnant yet-- we are in this weird medical in-between space I would have never imagined before I got here) and I have been desperate for books that speak to the complicated nuances of pregnancy (and non-pregnancy and post-pregnancy and everything in between). I am DEVOURING this book. Angela is the friend I need right now. Also, how did I just find out a placenta is an organ????
This. Book. I loved this book and it was just what I needed after my birth injuries 2 years ago. I have always wanted children but I never knew what it would do to my body and this book shows that while it shouldn‘t be the norm it is. Let‘s start to think about baby AND mother. These babies still need their mommas after they are born!
Met my friend for breakfast this morning with her very small human! She recommended this book so I‘ve been listening to it on audio... eye-opening!! By the way, this is a savory porridge with mushrooms and greens and bacon and cheese on top 😋!
I love surprises at work! 😍📚
