When Kayu Saitoh wakes up, she is in an unfamiliar place. Taken to a snowy mountainside, she was left there by her family and her village according to the tradition of sacrificing the lives of the elderly for the benefit of the young. Kayu was supposed to have passed quickly into the afterlife. Instead, she finds herself in Dendera, a utopian community built over decades by old women who, like her, were abandoned. Together, they must now face a new threat: a hungry mother bear. Dendera is riveting, hilarious, dark, gory, and absolutely brilliant...its as if Elena Ferrante and Stephen King collided on a Japanese mountaintop. In the village once you turn 70 you are left on the mountainside. But Kayu wakes up in Dendera, a community built over decades by women. Some want a peaceful existence and some want revenge on the village but all are threatened by a bear woken early from hibernation and hungry. Unexpectedly gory😯

There is actually a Japanese mythical practice of obasute where an elderly relative is carried to a mountain or remote place and left to die.

Soubhiville That‘s crazy! What a terrible practice! 6y
mreads @Soubhiville mythical! No evidence that anyone actually did it but.... 6y
Soubhiville Ah, ok. Hopefully it‘s only a myth. 6y

#succulentsaturday @ReadosaurusText @saguarosally
Think this succulent was called a dragon claw, can't remember its real name.

My current read about a group of women aged 70+, who were expected to sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the village once they turn 70 but instead have created their own community and are under attack by a hungry bear. 😯

esurient And, shelved. 6y

Couple of pics from the event where Sayaka Murata discussed Convenience Store Woman and Yuya Sato discussed the tagged book. I've read CSW, which was great, but not the tagged one. It sounds really interesting - it's about a group of old women left at the top of a mountain to die, so they won't be a burden on their village.

minkyb Oh this event looks great! 6y
