This (and the movie) was both harrowing in its depiction of a man with depression but strangely uplifting at the same time. Kudos to the author and Joaquin Phoenix who played the role so freakin‘ awesomely.

I was unaware this was based on the Jonathan Ames novella that has been sitting in my Kindle for years
What a flick! Joaquin Phoenix fascinates and terrifies me. Wow...

Jess I‘ve been looking at this one for weeks. Thanks for the review. I think I‘ll try it this weekend. 7y

Loved this one! I could read a whole series centered around Joe. I saw the movie earlier this year, and I was confused a lot, but the book makes perfect sense. The movie ending was more fleshed out, while the book ends more on a question mark. I want more!

Liked the movie and discovered it was a book, so about to start this one before the Library Police put a warrant out for me.

LibrarianRyan We rarely put warrants out for people. Just their $$. 😁😜 7y

Vicious. Concise. Clean writing.
I understand why Joaquin Phoenix was cast to play the main character in the movie.

TomeGnome This was a super express read. A gripping, dark novelette. My cup of tea. Reminds me of Andrew Vachss. 7y
