A masterwork [by] the preeminent historian of the Civil War era.Boston Globe Selected as a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review, this landmark work gives us a definitive account of Lincoln's lifelong engagement with the nation's critical issue: American slavery. A master historian, Eric Foner draws Lincoln and the broader history of the period into perfect balance. We see Lincoln, a pragmatic politician grounded in principle, deftly navigating the dynamic politics of antislavery, secession, and civil war. Lincoln's greatness emerges from his capacity for moral and political growth.

I‘m making an effort to read more nonfiction this year... First up, a book I bought when we visited the Lincoln Presidential Library. A fascinating & illuminating book about Lincoln‘s rise to national prominence, his antislavery position & the winding path to emancipation. The author credits much of Lincoln‘s greatness to his curiosity & “capacity for moral and political growth.” A little dense but a really good, thought-provoking read.

Visited Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum & of course left with a book. While there also saw a special exhibit on Presidents with ties to Illinois—Lincoln, Grant, Reagan, Obama—which was really well done. Most popular item in the exhibit according to staff? Maria Pinto‘s copy of the blue dress she made for Michelle Obama. Definitely recommend visiting if you‘re ever in Springfield IL & are interested in Lincoln or history generally.
