I love Ellen Gilchrist. I can't even explain why. Her characters are so flawed and I don't think I'd ever want to have a conversation with any of them. Well, not from this book anyway. I get completely invested though.

I haven't read much this week because we've had house guests. Today I took them for a day trip to New Orleans, so naturally I stopped by Faulkner House. I found a signed Ellen Gilchrist novel that I don't already own! 💙

This is a little tribute to Ellen Gilchrist, a writer of so many great short stories and novels that I read in my 20s. Many of them (novels and stories) revolve around different generations of the Hand family. They‘re a privileged Southern bunch but have their own issues - alcoholism, marriage problems etc. That world was so foreign to me, I found it totally escapist reading. Must reread & see if the magic is still there!

batsy I haven't heard of her... Nice! Escapist, absorbing reading about families is the best... It's why I read Rosamunde Pilcher 😊 7y
Cinfhen Same @batsy new to me author but sounds like a good series!! 7y
Centique @batsy and I‘ve never read Rosamunde Pilcher! I should try her right? 7y

Centique @Cinfhen 👌for sure! 7y
batsy I've heard her referred to as "books your grandma would like" and I bristle at that ? They're slow-paced, cosy, feel-good dramas and sometimes that's what one needs! 7y
Centique @batsy I totally agree. People shouldn‘t be so judgemental about reading! She sounds a bit like Maeve Binchy maybe? I‘ve read a couple of hers and they were lovely. 7y
batsy Yes, I've read only one Binchy I think but they are quite similar! I enjoyed it :) 7y
