Spy of the First Person
Spy of the First Person | Sam Shepard
5 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
The final work from the Pulitzer Prizewinning writer, actor, and musician, drawn from his transformative last days In searing, beautiful prose, Sam Shepards extraordinary narrative leaps off the page with its immediacy and power. It tells in a brilliant braid of voices the story of an unnamed narrator who traces, before our rapt eyes, his memories of work, adventure, and travel as he undergoes medical tests and treatments for a condition that is rendering him more and more dependent on the loved ones who are caring for him. The narrators memories and preoccupations often echo those of our current momentfor here are stories of immigration and community, inclusion and exclusion, suspicion and trust. But at the books core, and his, is familyhis relationships with those he loved, and with the natural world around him. Vivid, haunting, and deeply moving, Spy of the First Person takes us from the sculpted gardens of a renowned clinic in Arizona to the blue waters surrounding Alcatraz, from a New Mexico border town to a condemned building on New York Citys Avenue C. It is an unflinching expression of the vulnerabilities that make us humanand an unbound celebration of family and life.

Today is my 5 year #Litsyversary, and I just finished this little book in Yosemite, on the porch of the hotel my partner and I are staying at. ? What a strange and compelling fever dream of a book, capturing Shepard's last days in a kind of "autofiction." Makes me a little curious to read some of Shepard's other work! But barely a pick for me, 3/5 stars, just didn't *love* it.

Over these 5 years, I've always come back to Litsy. Love it here. ❤️

Spy of the First Person by Sam Shepard is the author's last work, which he drafted and edited up to the day he passed. It is about fragmented but focused on memory, aging, illness, and family ... Now I really need to go back and read his other work.

BarbaraBB Thank you for bringing this book to my attention! 7y
ReadingEnvy @BarbaraBB sure! I feel like I learned of him at the end of his arc but now there is a lot to read. 7y

I loved its simplicity, its unpretentious poetic language.
"Sometimes something sweeps across me. I'm not sure what it is. Sometimes swooping like the wind. Sometimes toenails or just the toes in the surf. Sometimes color. I remember sometimes you would start whole stories. Sometimes paragraphs. Sometimes sentences with the word "sometimes".
