Run for It
Run for It: Stories of Slaves Who Fought for Their Freedom | Marcelo d'Salete
6 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
Run For It ? a stunning graphic novel by internationally acclaimed illustrator Marcelo d’Salete ? is one of the first literary and artistic efforts to face up to Brazil’s hidden history of slavery. Originally published in Brazil ? where it was nominated for three of the country’s most prestigious comics awards ? Run For It has received rave reviews worldwide, including, in the U.S., The Huffington Post. These intense tales offer a tragic and gripping portrait of one of history’s darkest corners. It’s hard to look away.

Mehso-so

I didn't find the stories particularly inspiring or interesting. Part of it was that there was definitely some symbolism involved, but no explanation and it was lost on me. The art is plain black and white drawings, but a bit crude and hard to follow at times. Stories worth telling, I just didn't care much for this collection.

Stories of black resistance to Brazilian slavery. Many rebelled by running away to escape. The word Cumbe is used in Latin American countries to refer to settlements on the Brazilian lands inhabited by people of African descent.. gorgeous colors and illustrations.

My boys an husband are asleep and the house is quiet. I opened the window to hear the light wind and birds chirp while I crack open this beauty. #blackhistory #history #Brazil

Pickpick

Wow. I picked this up on a whim because the cover was so striking, and it did not disappoint. Both the art and the stories were powerful.
