Above the Timberline | Gregory Manchess
5 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
From renowned artist Gregory Manchess comes a lavishly painted novel about the son of a famed polar explorer searching for his stranded father, and a lost city buried under snow in an alternate future. When it started to snow, it didnt stop for 1,500 years. The Pole Shift that ancient climatologists talked about finally came, the topography was ripped apart and the weather of the world was changedforever. Now the Earth is covered in snow, and to unknown depths in some places. In this world, Wes Singleton leaves the academy in search of his father, the famed explorer Galen Singleton, who was searching for a lost city until Galens expedition was cut short after being sabotaged. But Wes believes his father is still alive somewhere above the timberline. Fully illustrated with over 120 pieces of full-page artwork throughout, Above the Timberline is a stunning and cinematic combination of art and novel.

I almost have up on this pretty quickly. I didn't like the layout or the journal-style writing, but I'm glad I stuck it out. A very imaginative story with gorgeous art. There were a few cheesy/cliche moments, especially in the last stretch, but for a first book, pretty decent.
Bonus factoid: Manchess illustrated the 2011 Mark Twain stamp, which I have sitting on my Twain shelf!

DivineDiana This looks like a beautiful book! 7y

JazzFeathers 😍😍😍😍 But.... icepunk? 🤔 7y
TieDyeDude I'm a little skeptical of "icepunk," but I just put a hold on it at my library 7y

TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GoodForCirculation @JazzFeathers I‘m dubbing it that myself because it has a lot of common steampunk components and is set in the frozen North. Does snowpunk sound cooler? Another (highly recommended) book that would fit this genre I made up would be (edited) 7y

This book was on my wish list since I saw it earlier in the year on Tor.com and it is a lovely thing to behold. It‘s a fully-illustrated rip-roaring icepunk adventure with polar bears, snow leopards, airships, and rocket sleds.

Interior shots to follow.

GrilledCheeseSamurai +1 for rocket sleds. I've seen this one on the shelves...looks interesting. 7y
TK421 I love a good airship! 7y

The art in this book is gorgeous! It's worth your time just to flip through it looking at the pictures! Sadly the actual story leaves a lot to be desired. And the text is printed so small you can barely read it. Then again.... There are polar bears which goes a long way to make up for this book's downfalls.
