A Prince and a Pauper Jemmy, once a poor boy living on the streets, now lives in a castle. As the whipping boy, he bears the punishment when Prince Brat misbehaves, for it is forbidden to spank, thrash, or whack the heir to the throne. The two boys have nothing in common and even less reason to like one another. But when they find themselves taken hostage after running away, they are left with no choice but to trust each other.

This book is ridiculous. lol I thought the writing was a little stilted, but intermediate chapter books often have that feeling. The adventure was amusing, and it was rewarding to see the boys‘ friendship blossom. Prince Brat‘s transformation was the most dramatic, but Jemmy learned some things about himself and what he wants from life, too. While reading it I wasn‘t feeling too impressed, but looking back at it as a whole has me feeling nostalgic

Jemmy had been plucked from the streets to serve as whipping boy to the arrogant and spiteful Prince Brat.

I don‘t think I would put this in my class library before I read it first. I am kind of skeptical about the story but am intrigued because it has won the Newberry medal.

Mehso-so

This fantasy book is set in what is supposed to resemble the real world but is nothing close to it. The characters are very well developed and colorful. The whipping boy serves as a way for elders to take out their frustration on the prince without hitting the prince himself.

A prince and his whipping boy (the boy who receives punishment whenever the prince misbehaves) are captured by highwaymen in a zany adventure tale with a surprisingly compassionate ending. A fun middle grade read!

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman illustrated by Peter Sis is a John Newbery Medal HF novel that is a great LC in the classroom! The story is about a prince who never is punished but instead his “whipping boy” gets his punishments. The prince eventually learns his lesson when he becomes the whipping boy. ESOL: 5. Teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts.

farynantenucci Interesting choice! I like that it is HF could be a great addition to a classroom library. 7y
Karlee.Diamond This sounds like an interesting book! It may be the perfect time to introduce concepts like irony! 7y

#TBRtemptation post 5! One of those books that has stuck with me since I read it as a little boy. A prince and his whipping boy (the one who takes the physical punishment for the prince's wrongs) escspe the castle and set out on an adventure that will include some memorable villains. A highly coveted and awarded children's book! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

BooksTeasAndBookishThings My 4th grade teacher introduced this to me as well as The BFG, Voices After Midnight, and The Summer Of Monkeys and I have always remembered those books. She was by far one of the main reasons I enjoyed reading as much as I did when I was a kid. #BlameMsMills 7y

Having fun reading this for my 5th grade lit circle at school. Get to have them infer for words like: catchpenny rogues, dimwits, trifle, varmints, oafs and chaw.

Listened to the audiobook. The narrator does an EXCELLENT job with the different voices. Number 81 in my quest to read all the Newbery winners.

This book's stuck with me more than most of my other childhood reads. Jemmy is Prince Brat's whipping boy--whipped for PB's punishments. The two run away together, meeting all kinds of interesting characters. The plot is fairly light and rompous with humorous characters & events, which overlay some very serious themes, particularly empathy, dignity, & prejudice. A Newberry winner! #PairWith: a chocolate milkshake, whipped cream & cherry on top.

BooksTeasAndBookishThings Omg I always loved this book ♥️ 8y
