This tale uses repetition and rhyming to illustrate the story. I can use this story in a classroom in various ways to emphasize literacy skills for my students. One way I can do this is by having a creative writing activity where students come up with their own version of the tale.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly is a traditional folktale. This story is fun-loving and catchy as the story is repetitive with lots of rhyming. The story shares the tale of an old lady who swallowed a fly and how she swallowed many other things as well.

“But swallowing the animals is not how this ends, because she coughed so hard...“

I would use this book in my classroom for entertainment purposes. The story focuses on an old lady who swallows a series of animals. The book has great illustrations and is really funny.

I would use “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly!“ with my students to show them that tall tales can tell humorous stories that follow a specific scheme and rhyme. I would use this book to continue instruction with a creative writing or story telling activity.

“There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly!“ is an example of a humorous cumulative tall tale due to its repetition, rhyme, and exaggerated story telling of unrealistic events.

This TL book is a creative way to stretch students‘ imagination. It‘s hard to guess what the old lady will swallow next. The items get bigger and crazier than the last, and keep students on their toes! You can use this book in the classroom to boost student creativity, and to enhance engagement during a read aloud. A reader‘s theatre would be a great way to get students moving and interacting with the story.

OliviaBuck https://www.kindergartenworks.com/kindergarten-teaching-ideas/retell-literacy-ce.... This website is a great resource to begin a readers theatre with this book. UDL 5.1- using multiple media for communication, would work well with this book, because you can use multiple different media‘s to communicate what is happening in the book. 4y
OliviaBuck EL Strategy 17- Provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions, also aligns with this book and the UDL strategy above. #ucflae3414sp21 (edited) 4y

My oldest boy loves these books. I will bestow upon them the rating of “pick” just because of that.
In all honesty, these books creep me out. 😂😳 But I see the appeal to little boys who love all things gross. 😁

Stacy_31 We have the Halloween version at school and the kids love it. 7y
CBee @SpaceyStacy we have that one too! 7y

There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly is a F story writ. By Lucille Colandro, illus. By Jared Lee and is perfect for ST. This silly story is about an old lady who swallows a variety of animals to catch the animal she just swallowed. UDL2.5-illus. Through mult. Media(with ST I would use props for a visual) EL15 reinforce key ideas again and again.( this story lends itself to this strat. With its repetition) #UCFLAE3414F17
