This book was disappointing and yet eerily familiar in that it focuses on a plague in the 1910s infecting Chinese & Russians alike. Unfortunately I found no real resolution, I felt the story ended abruptly and we never find an answer as to what caused the virus or the fates of the main characters.

I struggled with the rating for this book. It got a👍 from the group at my book club meeting last night, but I thought the build up was too slow and the ending was completely unsatisfying. However, I really liked the history, elements of scientific inquiry, the clash between Eastern and Western culture, and a sympathetic main character.

So I enjoyed this quiet book, overall. The pacing is decidedly slow and methodical. The characters are interesting, and clearly drawn yet still allowed to be mysterious. It‘s a study of human nature, power, culture and bigotry, and an account of how we react out of fear. It may not be everyone‘s cup of tea though.

I didn‘t expect to like this book as much as I did. I found it super relatable to the Ebola outbreak of 2014. It‘s a plot-driven novel that can feel slow at times; however, it pays off. I loved the characters and there was a slight A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW vibe to the novel.

Remember when you had to write a 25 page paper and you write everything you needed to by page 15 so you just start adding in random information and sentences in order to meet the length requirement? That's this book. Bailed at page 30

Dang. I really wanted to like this book, but I got 2/3 of the way through and realized that I still didn‘t care about anything that was happening or anyone it was happening to. This book had all the pieces to be a riveting novel, but goodness—and I hate to say it—it bored the heck out of me.

Now that I'm finished with The City of Brass, it's on to 1910 Russia! Looking forward to diving into this medical mystery novel!
