Join our plucky Victorian Egyptologist , together with her devastatingly handsome and brilliant husband Radcliffe, in another exciting escapade The irascible husband of Victorian Egyptologist Amelia Peabody is living up to his reputation as 'The Father of Curses'. Denied permission to dig at the pyramids of Dahshoor, Emerson is awarded instead the 'pyramids' of Mazghunah - countless mounds of rubble in the middle of nowhere. Nothing in this barren spot seems of any interest but then a murder in Cairo changes all of that. The dead man was an antiques dealer, killed in his shop, so when a sinister-looking Egyptian spotted at the crime scene turns up in Mazghunah, Amelia can't resist following his trail. At the same time she has to keep an eagle eye on her wayward son Rameses and his elegant and calculating cat and look into the mysterious disappearance of a mummy case...

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 Book 3 of this delightful historical mystery series is extremely entertaining. Amelia is as strong-willed and independent as ever. Emerson is irascible and soft-hearted, as curious as Amelia, and dotes on his son. Ramses is finally old enough to accompany them to Egypt on his first dig and is extremely precocious. “The Cat Bastet,” as she is called, plays a vital role in solving the mystery.

While I am always delighted to visited Amelia and Emerson, this isn't my favorite of the series. Their son Ramses is, frankly, obnoxious. The mystery is a little shaky. And every ten pages we have to listen to Emerson expounding on why he's more intelligent than anyone who has ever believed in any religion. But outside of those annoyances, there is still so much to enjoy. The setting, the non-Ramses characters (in fairness, Ramses matures and ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) becomes one of my favorite characters later in the series), and Amelia's sparkling narration are all just so fun. A softer pick than some of the others in the series, but a pick nonetheless.

CarolynM I‘ve always thought you need to have known Ramses as a child to fully appreciate him as an adult😆 7mo
TheAromaofBooks @CarolynM - This is the one where she gives him that speech impediment... I literally never have issues LISTENING to someone who has a lisp, stutter, or other issue with speaking out loud, but there is something about READING it that just really gets annoying 😂 I think she's trying to remind readers that he's only five or whatever, but either way I can't deal with how they just let him do whatever he wants/think he's clever for finding loopholes. 7mo

TheAromaofBooks @CarolynM - But I do genuinely enjoy seeing the way his love for Egypt and its history is from a very early age onward 😂 And you can see where he gets his penchant for adventure and sneaking about!!! 7mo
TheSpineView Fantastic!🤩📖📚 7mo
Ruthiella I feel that Ramses has as a child displays the worst characteristics of his parents! 😂 But he does become more tolerable as he gets older and it occasionally allowed to finish a sentence. 7mo

Another entertaining Amelia Peabody mystery! The mystery was less interesting in this one, but the Emerson family relations and the adventure were very enjoyable.

More fun times w/my fave Victorian Egyptologists! & now we‘re getting the intro of a MasterCriminal against whom Amelia can pit her wits. Plus, we have the addition of Ramses to this Egyptology party. Ramses is a bit/lot too precocious to be at all believable, but he is a fun addition to this crew. This mystery has our Egyptologists working on a less than desirable dig but they still find plenty of thievery, murder, & mayhem to keep them occupied.

Laura317 I love this quirky family! 6y
CarolynM Ah Ramses! 💓 You've got to have known him as a child to appreciate him as an adult. Just you wait! 6y

Working on a re-read of this series for 2018, enjoying them all as much as I remembered the first time around.

I thought it was cool enough for the extended version of my walk, but not quite - taking refuge under this tree.

Starting a new audiobook - I had intended this to be my next read a few weeks ago, but my hold list got away from me and I had to listen to four unexpected holds first.

I'm trying out the Libby app rather than Overdrive for the first time. I don't think it will be my primary audiobook app until they bring the wish list feature into it. I use that all the time with Overdrive.

MarriedtoMrT They have a tagging feature. You can make one of your tags "wishlist." 7y
leslieisreading @MarriedtoMrT thanks for the tip! My biggest issue is that I already have a massive wishlist built up in Overdrive that they don't show in Libby. Their help section indicates that they eventually want to allow to sync that. 7y

This book was cute! It's purely a fluff kind of mystery, but I love Amelia and the series so far, and I can't wait to start the next one
