Beauty met the Beast and there was...bloody murder? Its the Annual Ambassadorial Ball in Glause, and Lady Isabella Farrah, the daughter of New Civets Ambassador, is feeling pleasantly scintillated. In the library is Lord Pecus, a charming gentleman whose double mask hides a beastly face, and who has decided that Isabella is the very person to break the Pecus curse. In the ballroom is young Lord Topher, who is rapidly falling in love with an older woman. And in the cardroom, lying in a pool of his own blood, is the body of one of Isabellas oldest friends: Raoul, Civets Head Guardsman. The papers sewn into his sash seem to suggest espionage gone wrong, but Isabella is not so certain. Lord Pecus, as Commander of the Watch, is of the opinion that Isabella should keep out of the investigation and out of danger. Isabella is of the opinion that it is her murder to investigate, and that what a certain Beast-Lord doesnt know wont hurt him... Will Isabella find the murderer before Lord Pecus does, or will she end her investigation as a bloody spatter on the parlour floor?

This loose Beauty & the Beast retelling has a serious cozy mystery vibe to it. I liked the characters, I liked their world, and I really, really liked the magic-as-technology angle. More like this, please.

The book does feel a bit longer than necessary and has a few pacing issues that slow the mystery down, but I can‘t mind much since it‘s all due to Gingell‘s clear delight in her characters and their story. You can tell she had FUN writing this.

Book + rooibos + cheesecake. Yum.

I got a bit frustrated with MASQUE this afternoon. It‘s mostly good, but it felt like the longest 300-page book EVER. I couldn‘t figure out why the percentage read bar was advancing so slowly.

I investigated, and discovered I‘d read the page count wrong. The book‘s 398 pages, not 298 like I thought.

Now I‘m enjoying it again.

#weekendreads time!

1. MASQUE by W.R. Gingell for fiction, DIWALI by Rina Singh for nonfiction, THE BONE KEY on Sarah Monette for short fiction, THE WAY OF KINGS by Brandon Sanderson as my in-between book, and MASTER & APPRENTICE by Claudia Gray on audio.

2. 16 books; 2 albums

3. I usually read comics or revisit something I love. Audiobooks help a lot, too.

I‘m pretty thoroughly snowed in. BLAH.

In a small bid to raise my spirits, I‘m reading MASQUE by holiday light. I‘m about 25% in and I like it quite a bit so far. It‘s rather like a fantasy cozy mystery.

Sace That cover is beautiful! 5y
xicanti @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I love it! I‘m bummed this is one of those ebooks where the cover doesn‘t appear within the file itself. I‘ve gotta make do with thumbnails. 5y

Wow, my master degree was so busy I went quiet for almost 2 months! But I'm back with an awesome indie fantasy book. It's funny, unique characters and a retelling of my favorite fairy tale! It's also a great mystery book. So this book is amazing for almost everyone, so please read it :D

Gingell's spin on the story we know is refreshing. The heroine is clever, witty and just a bit too optimistic but that's what makes the rest believable as we meet our beast, Alexander, who is just as clever, witty, and dare I say not tragic in his role of Commander of the Watch.
This additional cast of characters are written just as well creating a well versed set of characters.
