Bone In The Throat
Bone In The Throat | Anthony Bourdain
All is not well at the Dreadnought Grill . . . the chef has a smack habit, the owner has been set up by the FBI and in the midst of this, the sous-chef Tommy is just trying to do his job. As depraved as it is hilarious, Anthony Bourdain's first novel is street smart and spiced with drugged-up savvy, foul-mouthed feds and salty mob speak. With a cast of unforgettables like the hitman who covers himself in clingfilm to avoid leaving fingerprints and a plot with more twists than a plate of spaghetti, Bone in the Throat rocks through the streets of Manhattan at a blistering pace.

Mehso-so

So Bourdain‘s fiction is straight mid except for his short story collection (tagged below) that I read last month and gave 4.25⭐️. That said, if you‘re a big fan (or a completist 🙋🏻‍♀️), it‘s worth a read. There are fun Easter eggs of places he discusses in his later memoirs. It is so strange that he always has to write himself into books even if it makes little sense to the plot. (A junkie chef in this one.) There were long scenes ⬇️

Megabooks Of the chef scoring heroin in bombed out LES buildings and then going to the methadone clinic. All Bourdain‘s real life. The book is ostensibly about a young son of a mob hustler who just wants to be a chef and how he‘s still tangled up in that life. The short story collection if you want to read (imo) the best of his fiction ➡️ 2mo
BarbaraBB I didn‘t know he wrote fiction! 2mo
TheBookHippie I liked the short story collection. 2mo

Megabooks @BarbaraBB yes, gangster-y crime fiction. Plus a few graphic novels. 2mo
Megabooks @TheBookHippie it‘s definitely the best of his fiction. He wrote it after the success of KC so I wonder if he had a better editor or maybe just understood his own voice better. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
TheBookHippie @Megabooks probably . 2mo

About to record our episode on Kitchen Confidential, so I've been doing a lot of Bourdain “research“ (watching him on TV.) He was by far my favorite television chef and also far and away the best travel show host. It's been a good time, makes me want to travel more and eat lots of weird exotic stuff.

Twainy Oddly I‘m super picky about food, never seen or heard about him before a year ago when I lucked upon an audio version of Kitchen Confidential that he narrates. I fell in love with him. Awesome book. Sad that he is gone. 4y
smalldogs_bigbooks2419 A friend lent me a copy of Kitchen Confidential but I haven‘t read it yet. (edited) 4y

Therewillbebooks @smalldogs_bigbooks2419 I highly recommend it. He was a great writer. Not a chef who could write well, but a writer who happened to be a chef. 4y
Prairiegirl_reading I loved him! My husband and I used to watch parts unknown together and we both still it miss it and him. 4y
Therewillbebooks @Prairiegirl_reading Yeah me too. Really sad. The show really holds up. There's not really anyone like him out there 4y

If you are a fan of Bourdain, then you know he never shied away from his demons. He was pretty open about his history of drug addiction. What really surprised me (though it shouldn‘t have) is how much of himself he had put into this fiction novel. One of the main characters is a chef dealing with heroin addiction. The other is a sous-chef trying his best to make a good career for himself. I can easily picture Bourdain in either roll.

Bourdain‘s fiction writing is every bit as intriguing as his nonfiction. So far there is a dead body, the mob, an FBI informant, and a few chefs at the middle of it all. The descriptions of the food are making me drool. The writing has sucked me in.

#Aprella #NewYork 🍎I love foodie books, I love New York, I love foodie novels set in New York. (Apparently I love them so much I used 3 of these titles before in a New York musical prompt--but since it was 10 months ago & I had already made the collage when I remembered, I'm going with it!) 😆👍

I read, enjoyed & got hungry over these 9 foodie fiction books all set, or mostly set, in The Big Apple. 🍎🍏🍎#foodiebooks
