The Voynich Manuscript
The Voynich Manuscript | Raymond Clemens
8 posts | 2 read | 12 to read
The first authorized copy of this mysterious, much-speculated-upon, one-of-a-kind, centuries-old puzzle. The Voynich Manuscript is produced from new photographs of the entire original and accompanied by expert essays that invite anyone to understand and explore the enigma.
Many call the fifteenth-century codex, commonly known as the Voynich Manuscript, the worlds most mysterious book. Written in an unknown script by an unknown author, the manuscript has no clearer purpose now than when it was rediscovered in 1912 by rare books dealer Wilfrid Voynich. The manuscript appears and disappears throughout history, from the library of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to a secret sale of books in 1903 by the Society of Jesus in Rome. The books language has eluded decipherment, and its elaborate illustrations remain as baffling as they are beautiful. For the first time, this facsimile, complete with elaborate folding sections, allows readers to explore this enigma in all its stunning detail, from its one-of-a-kind Voynichese text to its illustrations of otherworldly plants, unfamiliar constellations, and naked women swimming though fantastical tubes and green baths.

The essays that accompany the manuscript explain what we have learned about this workfrom alchemical, cryptographic, forensic, and historical perspectivesbut they provide few definitive answers. Instead, as New York Times best-selling author Deborah Harkness says in her introduction, the book invites the reader to join us at the heart of the mystery.

For #autumnplease day 20 I thought about the book I could think of that had the most secrets of its own - which led me right to the voynich manuscript and the encoded language no one's been able to read since it was discovered. Whether it's a hoax or not (I think it likely is) I still think it's unimagineably cool

As a Mystic I experience #synchronicity & #serendipity quite often so it's no surprise to find that different 📦 from different swap partners here on #Litsty would synchronize beautifully. As you can see #DeborahHarkness author of #BookOfLife also dies the #introduction on the manuscript as she is a historian of science and professor at #USC

As you can see the manuscript has awesome #fold-out pages for the larger and more complex images

tournevis I'm cautiously optimistic that this might be the solution. But if it is really this simple, why has no one seen it before. Abreciations and ligatures? That simple? 7y
Yossarian @tournevis That's my question. The explanation seems simple that it raises the bigger mystery of why it was seen as mysterious for so long. 7y
tournevis @Yossarian We agree 7y

"Now since there was in my library, uselessly taking up space, a certain riddle of the Sphinx, a piece of writing in unknown characters.... From the pictures of herbs, of which there are a great many in the codex, and of varied images, stars and other things bearing the appearance of chemical symbolism, it is my guess that the whole thing is medical"
