Red Riding Nineteen Seventy Four
Red Riding Nineteen Seventy Four | David Peace
9 posts | 8 read | 12 to read
Jeanette Garland, missing Castleford, July 1969. Susan Ridyard, missing Rochdale, March 1972. Claire Kemplay, missing Morley, since yesterday. Christmas bombs and Lord Lucan on the run, Leeds United and the Bay City Rollers, The Exorcist and It Ain't Half Hot Mum. It's winter, 1974, Yorkshire, and Eddie Dunford's got the job he wanted - crime correspondent for the Yorkshire Evening Post. He didn't know it was going to be a season in hell. A dead little girl with a swan's wings stitched into her back. In Nineteen Seventy Four, David Peace brings the passion and stylistic bravado of an Ellroy novel to this terrifyingly intense journey into a secret history of sexual obession and greed, and starts a highly acclaimed crime series that has redefined how the genre is approached.

The crime side of the story is interesting, but I wasn‘t convinced by author‘s narration style. Short sentences and some parts of the story in short fragments are not my thing. I suppose that effect should be to build the tension, but the effect on me was just the opposite. Very dark novel about crimes, corruption and with the little glimpse into society in 70‘s.

TFW you finally get far enough in the first in a series that you can commit to buying the other three. 1974 is a tough, tough read but it‘s beautiful and powerfully written.

quirkyreader I have been looking forward to reading this series. 7y
BookCottageBlog Had not heard of these. Sounds intriguing. 7y

I've gotten further in this than my previous attempts, even if I did come to a super intense sequence! 😬 Trying to enjoy a relaxing Saturday before exploring New Haven.

I have been dancing (and carrying) around this one for literally years (you can tell by how beat up the copy is). I almost bought the next three in the quartet but have told myself "no" until I finish this one. I'm only ten pages into this harsh, surreal, haunted crime novel...will I finish? Time will only tell! Are there any books in your collection you've been dancing around?

TobeyTheScavengerMonk The miniseries was incredibly good, but I don‘t know if I could handle the books. 7y
brendanmleonard @TobeyTheScavengerMonk the miniseries is a personal favorite - we rewatched it again this winter. But I read an essay in Ghosts of my Life about the books/miniseries and I was inspired to check it out. 7y
LibrarianJen There are quite a few. The one that comes to mind is one that I only had 50 pages left when I went into labor with my 2nd child and I never got around to finishing it. 7y

Peace has a strange style, describing in flashes and spurts like shining a torch light in a dark room never quite getting the full picture, can be intriguing and frustrating in equal measure. TBH still not sure who the killer was or why. Like being a hell of a journey but not sure if u are at right destination.

I smiled "Big Brother?"
"He's watching you."
I glanced up at blue sky turning grey and said "if you seriously believe her you should tell someone."
"Who am I going to tell? The Law? These people are the fucking Law. Every life is in danger"

#riotgrams #numbertitles
After the excellent channel 4 dramatisation of 3 of these titles i read the books. They are very dark crime novels that experiment with form but are very well written although the subject matter is grim, the harshness of the 1970's west Yorkshire landscape mix with police corruption against the backdrop of the hunt for the Yorkshire ripper. I felt drained after each book.

AMVP I've got the first 3: found the middle 2 at a used bookstore, then got book 1 of Thriftbooks. I'll give the series a try before investing in book 4. 8y
andrew61 @AMVP yes the tv series is very good although misses one book out- it is full of very good actors including paddy considine , and david Morrissey et al. 8y
