Waiting for the Flood
Waiting for the Flood | Alexis Hall
7 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
People come as well as go. Twelve years ago, Edwin Tully came to Oxford and fell in love with a boy named Marius. He was brilliant. An artist. It was going to be forever. Two years ago, it ended. Now Edwin lives alone in the house they used to share. He tends to damaged books and faded memories, trying to build a future from the fragments of the past. Then the weather turns, and the river spills into Edwin's quiet world, bringing with it Adam Dacre from the Environment Agency. An unlikely knight, this stranger with roughened hands and worn wellingtons, but he offers Edwin the hope of something he thought he would never have again. As the two men grow closer in their struggle against the rising waters, Edwin learns he can't protect himself from everything and sometimes he doesn't need to try.

The first version has been a favorite reread for me. I adore everything about Edwin. But Marius, and Chasing the Light were a bit of a struggle for me. Marius lashes out at people, which is a trait I don't like to be around, and casual sex never works for me (it's a me thing) but eventually I finished it, and was glad I did. It was good to learn about Marius, but I don't think I want to spend more time with him.

Alex Hall's books are my book candy. They are always things that should not work for me - 1 character is always an a-hole that I wouldn't tolerate in other books. The plot holes are gapping, literally having me say "But why?"
But. I absolutely devour these books!! I love how Hall writes. I find everyone charming and I stay up way too late reading. This one reminds me of 10 Things but is different enough to be enjoyable

CarolynM I agree with you, it‘s his writing that really does it for me, the stories are almost beside the point. But I did love this one and I‘m dying to get my hands on the expanded edition, which is supposed to be available here this week (but it was supposed to be out last month, too, so we‘ll see) 7mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @CarolynM I think I read the expanded! There is a short that Hall made into a complete book right? The one I read is 380ish pages. I will say it feels a bit like 2 stories put together and then meshed at the end. But I really enjoyed it. 7mo

Argh! I just downloaded the ebook of this to check something and discovered it has AUTHOR ANNOTATIONS which weren't included in the audiobook! So now I have to read the whole thing again! 😂

CarolynM I am so looking forward to the extras in this reissue. It‘s not released here until mid April☹️ 8mo

This could be considered cheating for the #BacklistReadathon, since I have read the original novella before, but this new edition is three times as long, including a second novella and an epilogue for both. It's two touching stories about Edwin and Marius, long time lovers who weren't able to stay together but go on to form meaningful, healing relationship with others. Lots of drama, especially in Marius' story, because he is ornery AF. 😂

CarolynM I cried all the way through the original novella. I can‘t wait to get my hands on this expanded version. 8mo
willaful @CarolynM You might keep some hankies ready for the second story. 😁 The audiobook is extremely good. 8mo

#ReadingResolutions #TearJerker

I cried almost all the way through this book. I'm not sure why it moved me so much, maybe I was just in that mood.
