The Dog of the Marriage
The Dog of the Marriage: The Collected Stories | Amy Hempel
4 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
A quietly powerful presence in American fiction in during the past two decades, these collected stories show the true scale of Hempel's achievement. Her compact fictions, populated by smart neurotic somewhat damaged narrators, speak grandly to the longings and insecurities in all of us, and in a voice that is bracingly direct and sneakily profound. These are stories about people who make choices that seem inevitable, whose longings and misgivings evoke eternal human experience. With her trademark compassion and wit, Hempel takes readers into the marriages, minor disasters and moments of revelation in an uneasy America

An excellent collection of short stories. I would definitely recommend this, especially if you're a fan of character pieces that reveal less than they imply. There's a lot to be dug through here; it's definitely a book that requires close attention. Personally, I'd really recommend Offertory, although I read this with a group and we all chose different stories that really stuck with us.

Rainy day lunch of Boudin clam chowder and half of a ham and spinach bagel sandwich. Also picking up again with Hempel‘s collection.
Do you like reading short stories? My friend doesn‘t, saying she doesn‘t like how things happen and then the story ends so quickly and then what? I kinda think it‘s like eavesdropping on strangers in a cafe, hearing part of their stories then going my own way, making up my own ending

CocoReads I‘d have to say, I mostly agree with your friend. I have enjoyed some short stories but for the most part I‘m just always left with wanting more. 7y
TrishB Not a short story person myself! 7y
bedandabook I love them, after years of avoiding them because I thought they simply weren‘t enough to get into. Now I love the way they make you think. Favourite collection has to be 7y

BiblioLitten I like them once in a while...like when I'm waiting in the doctor's office or during a short commute. I love stories by O. Henry, Anton Chekhov and Ruskin Bond 7y
minkyb I don‘t read many collections but if I like the author then I will read whatever they write in whatever form! (edited) 7y
Jeg I used to like them when I was much younger. For some unknown reason tend to avoid them now. 7y
