A NF National Geographic by Kathleen Zoehfeld tells us all about rocks and minerals and how they are related and form. With vivid pictures, definitions and pronunciations of new words, and even a quiz at the back this book would be a great choice for IR. https://educators.brainpop.com/lesson-plan/rocks-and-minerals-activities-for-kid... this has different classroom activities to get students engaged in finding and classifying rocks. #ucflae3414f17

JordanD I like the idea about going outside and finding rocks and then classifying them through observations based on the story so I would utilize EL strategy 41 and UDL strategy 6.3 to have them manage the criteria for each category of rock type and to record all of the information and their hypothesis in their notebooks. 7y
DrSpalding You have heard me say it before but you don't get much better than National Geographic. This is an excellent book to use in your science curriculum and I love the idea of utilizing a notebook to record their scientific observations. 7y
Brittanyradzak I love all of the National Geographic books and I want all of them! I love how you included science notebooks that students could record observations in. 7y
ChristinB I remember using these types of guides in elementary school. They have so much information and are so easy to read. The colors and pictures will definitely capture the attention of young readers 7y

National Geographic Kids: Rocks and minerals is a great NF IR to have in a classroom library. Having all of the National Geographic Kids books would be an essential to my classroom library. I would use UDL principle 3.1 to try to connect with background knowledge about rocks and minerals. I would also use that background knowledge to build upon by connecting it with a lesson(ESOL strategy 4) with this book as support. #ucflae3414f17

Brittanyradzak https://educators.brainpop.com/lesson-plan/rocks-and-minerals-activities-for-kid... This resource gives really good activities that you can use in the classroom. It gives students a different perspective of rocks and minerals which are easily accessible to students. Activities focusing on learning about rocks and sediment can be done with a quick walk outside. There are many aspects of rocks that students can observe like color and texture. 7y
