The Law of Dreams
The Law of Dreams: A Novel | Peter Behrens
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Winner of the Governor General's Award for Fiction. Peter Behrens's bestselling novel is gorgeously written, Homeric in scope, and haunting in its depiction of a young man's perilous journey from innocence to experience. The Law of Dreams follows Fergus O'Brien from Ireland to Liverpool and Wales during the Great Potato Famine of 1847, and then beyond to a harrowing Atlantic crossing to Montreal. On the way, Fergus loses his family, discovers a teeming world beyond the hill farm where he was born, and experiences three great loves.

A few chapters in and already hooked. I‘m anticipating the anger, grief, and trauma to come in this historical literary drama about colonization in Ireland and what carries forward in Canada. The writing is gorgeous and the author is extraordinarily skilled at drawing readers into the lives of the MCs.

Day 30: #West

Fergus' life in Ireland was fairly happy - until the potato blight struck. The search for a better life drives him first to England, and then westward to Canada and the US.

The best historical FIC makes me want to learn more, so this was a gateway drug to Irish history, especially this period when some of my ancestors followed the same path.
