In the late 19th - early 20th centuries , the European powers became aware of the forgotten societies which had existed in and around the Taklamakan desert on the Silk Road. What resulted was a rush of archaeologist in the style of Indiana Jones, men such as Hedin and Stein who endured hardship and dangers to find forgotten artistic and religious treasures and then sent them home to Europe often without consulting the owners.
