If Women Rose Rooted
If Women Rose Rooted: The Power of the Celtic Woman | Sharon Blackie
5 posts | 5 read | 9 to read
'I love this book. Truly, it's mind-blowing in the most profound and exhilarating sense. This is an anthem for all we could be, an essential book for this, the most critical of recent times. I sincerely hope every woman who can read is given one, and has the time and the space to read it.' - Manda Scott, author of Boudica and Into the Fire. In this extraordinary book of myth, memoir and modern-day mentors (from fashion designers to lawyers), Blackie faces the wasteland of Western culture, the repression of women, and the devastation of our planet.

I started this a couple of days ago (thanks @squirrelbrain ) exploring our relationship as women with nature, and the stories and Celtic myths that celebrate powerful women (kind of).

It starts with holy wells, and the keepers of the waters, so I thought I‘d stop by the Leechwells in Totnes yesterday - they‘re in amongst the high walls on the edge of town that surrounded a medieval leper hospital, and are seen as holy and healing (also v pretty!)

Graywacke And v cool! 3y
squirrelbrain They do look pretty! Hope you‘re enjoying the book. 3y
rockpools @squirrelbrain She‘s speaking to some really interesting people, and I‘m enjoying the myths woven through. She‘s a tad negative at the mo - I‘m hoping it‘s just part of the journey, and it turns around later on! 2y
squirrelbrain Oh no,I hope she does start to look a bit more on the bright side! 🤞 2y

Pickpick

I read this book while developing my own sense of what female empowerment could look like when un-coopted by patriarchal myths. This book gave me a vocabulary to voice my intuitions, and has led me through hundreds of hours of discussion after putting down the book.
