The Angry Tide
The Angry Tide: A Novel of Cornwall 1798-1799 | Winston Graham
11 posts | 14 read | 9 to read
The Angry Tide is the seventh novel in Winston Graham's sweeping series of Cornwall, Poldark. Cornwall, towards the end of the 18th century. Ross Poldark sits for the borough of Truro as Member of Parliament - his time divided between London and Cornwall, his heart divided about his wife, Demelza. His old feud with George Warleggan still flares - as does the illicit love between Morwenna and Drake, Demelza's brother. Before the new century dawns, George and Ross will be drawn together by a loss greater than their rivalry - and Morwenna and Drake by a tragedy that brings them hope... 'From the incomparable Winston Graham... who has everything that anyone else has, then a whole lot more' Guardian

I am really upset right now!! 🤬 I just got this email from #botm advising that my 6 credits will be lost if I don‘t use them all by 12/22. I bought an annual subscription in fall of 2016 and at no time was there an expiration on how long you could skip for. I don‘t recall that being communicated when they went to the credit system and I can‘t find anything about it on their website.

Did anyone know about this? Or get a similar email?

Alfoster No, but that doesn‘t sound fair at all. Book lovers should be able to read and buy at their own pace! 6y
TheLibrarian That‘s crazy and I never saw anything about this before. 6y
Hazel0303 Thank you @Alfoster and @TheLibrarian ! I have written to them and will let you know how it pans out. I was going to cancel my membership anyway, but how do they expect me to use 6 credits in two months? Even if you order a second book for the month it‘s a $9.99 charge so I‘m losing regardless. 6y

BookishShelly I bought a year‘s worth of credits in January and they did state that I had to use them or lose them. They should have informed you when the system changed. That‘s awful they didn‘t. 6y
BookishShelly @Hazel0303 they don‘t charge you 9.99 for the 2nd book unless you don‘t want to use a credit. I got 2 books for October and was charged 2 credits. (Though per book a credit costs more than 9.99, I plan to cancel soon and am trying to use my credits up.) (edited) 6y
Hazel0303 Good to know @BookishShelly thank you! I‘m going to have to try and fight for adding a second book to my October box that I already ordered then so I can use them all up. I will just use them up on previous month books 🤷🏻‍♀️ what can you do? 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf That‘s ridiculous! I‘m not renewing my membership once my credits are out. 6y

Took a long lunch so I could finish and be able to donate to the library when in town tomorrow. A friend gave me the complete series. I am determined to get them off my shelves by the end of the year. It really is just one very long soap opera. I'm finally past where the show is. Makes for more interesting reading. Last few pages were particularly enthralling.

Mehso-so

Another satisfying addition to the #Poldark soap opera, however was performed by one of those male narrators (Oliver J. Hembrough) who reads female characters as breathy, nasal, whiney, or just in a horrible high falsetto. So tired of hearing this in my audiobooks 🤦‍♀️

1. Commuting (40-60 min drive to work each way depending on traffic) or doing chores.

2. Library primarily (support your local library!), Audible as a last resort.

3. Sped up! Usually 1.75

4. I like Mark Bramhall - I listened to his narration of The Orchardist by Amanda Coplin. On the flip side, Sheila Mitchell is awful. So raspy I can‘t listen to her at all.

5. What an odd question. Who has a favorite book? I ❤️ THEM ALL.

Wow! Lots going on in this book. Interesting to read on the heels of Peter Ackroyd's Revolution; some historical events and characters appear. And at the same time some scenes are depressingly relevant to the 21st century 😑Additional comments spoiler tagged.

rabbitprincess Also, SO HAPPY that Whitworth finally got what was coming to him...although I wish Morwenna could have poisoned him 😁 7y

I finished this book weeks ago but somehow missed reviewing it.

Book 7 of the Poldark series and huge changes are afoot. This book had some major plot developments and I anticipate that the series will change greatly from this point.

Some of the story lines, especially near the end of the book, bordered on the soap operatic.

That said, this is top notch historical fiction and I love it.

RealBooks4ever Recently purchased the first novel after learning about the series on Litsy! Sounds fabulous! 💜💜💜 7y

Second half of the Poldark series. About to dive in.

"To be good to the poor, to be benevolent to the poor, to build them a fine new hospital... all these were admirable aims and deserving of high commendation. Now abideth Faith, Hope and Charity, and the greatest of these is Charity. But what about Hope? All these people... were bent on alleviating distress. But what about trying to PREVENT the distress?"

Oh, I could kiss you, Ross Poldark.

quietlycuriouskate I suspect there might be a queue! 7y
rockpools Every time you post these, you remind me how much I need to read them! 7y
Libby1 @river_voice - no kidding! 7y

That is challenging.

I haven't posted for a while as I'm currently reading the Poldark Series, which there's 12 of and I'd rather review them all at once, but I decided to do a Sam Carne themed photo today, he's become one of my favourite characters, and I wanted to share it here! The Angry Tide is full of twists and turns, it's such a roller coaster ride but it's so worth the read, not my favourite Poldark, but brilliant all the same. #poldark #winstongraham #demelza

Libby1 I'm reading Warleggan at the moment so I have a way to go. This is a lovely photo. 7y
elissapoletti @Libby1 they're such great books, you're in for a big one in the next book The Black Moon, it's up there with my favourite! And thank you! 😊 7y

Home for Canada Day weekend. My parents moved one of their bookcases into my old room. Luckily for me, it contains most of the mysteries! Top shelf is for some historical fiction and light fiction. Second shelf features Minette Walters, P.D. James, and Harry Bingham 😄

rwmg And when are your parents expecting you to emerge? 7y
rabbitprincess @rwmg I am going home on Monday, so I will have to emerge by then 😂 7y
