so-soKatz writes beautifully about the relationship between working dogs and humans—and this girl and I have trained enough together that I can always relate to his books—but since this one is fiction, he got all weird and got inside Rose‘s mind with lots of sections about her becoming semi-conscious about the process of domestication and the similarities between her and coyotes and those parts just irked me.
A windchill of -10 means we‘re staying snuggled up with this book no matter how heroic Rose might be in the pages we‘re reading.

“The relationship had grown way beyond anything Sam understood at first, or even imagined. It was more like a partnership, he had told Katie, an understanding subtler than words. It was something he lived, not something he thought much about.”
Single digit temps seemed like a good excuse to snuggle up and read about a dog who‘s tougher than we are.
