Up, Tall and High!
Up, Tall and High! | Ethan Long
7 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Three side-splitting stories in one great picture book! In three laugh-out-loud situations, an irresistible cast of colorful birds illustrate the concepts of "up," "tall" and "high." First, a short peacock proves that he may not be tall, but he definitely isn't small. Then, a resourceful bird helps his penguin friend find a way to fly. Finally, two birds want to live in the same tree, but what goes up must come down! Each short story features a flap that reveals a surprise twist. With fun fold-outs, easy-to-read text, and a hilarious cast of characters, these stories beg preschoolers and emerging readers to act them out again and again.

“I may not be tall... but I am not small!“
This modern fantasy quality piece of literature is a great picture book for students who want to initiate friendships and laugh out loud. It would be best for a K2 classroom, for a quick read-aloud, and for storytelling.

It awarded as a recipient of the 2013 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, winning a Golden medal.

AndreaEfres LAFS.K.SL.1.1 In which the students develop comprehension and collaboration inside of a classroom environment to perceive others as the person that they choose to be and follow agreed-upon social rules. As a strategy, I think each student can choose to be a bird depending on their mood of the day.
UDL: Comprehension (3) Guide information processing and visualization. Through pictures, students are able to connect that there is a story.

This Theodor Seuss Geisel award winning RF holds three short stories about three hilarious birds all in one picture book with flaps that feature surprise twists! The novelty of this book is how accessible yet entertaining it can be for students who are still learning to read! PR could be used to practice fluency for K-2/ ESOL students who may need a short, playful, yet educational book to practice their reading together.

DMoux https://www.readbrightly.com/meet-illustrator-ethan-long/ This link allows you to meet the author and illustrator Ethan Long through a series of interview questions that took place with the Brightly Editors. UDL 1.1 is used by offering ways of customizing the display of information through flaps. ESOL strategy 34 can be used by de-emphasizing the speed of reading this short book and focusing on accuracy of words. #ucflae3414su19 5y
Estradan The flaps are such a neat idea! I think it‘ll keep students engaged. The interview also gives insight on who Ethan Long is and I think that‘ll be good for students who enjoyed this book so they can look for similar books by the author. 5y
DrSpalding He is such a cool guy! This would be a wonderful resource to use with an author study in the primary grades. 5y

This Modern Fantasy Theodore Seuss Geisel award winning (2013) book “UP, TALL, and HIGH” would be an excellent book to have in a classroom for a RA! In this fun book, colorful birds illustrate concepts of up, tall, and high by facing different obstacles and problems. The theme of this book is about being happy and content with who you are.

Thayes1787 With fun fold outs, easy to read text, and hilarious characters, this story encourages young emergent readers to act out the motions (DR). This book would also be great for strategies S, CR, and GR. (edited) 6y
Thayes1787 The EL strategies 3 & 4 are great to use for this book because it encourages them to be positive and relate to situations in the past that are similar to the characters actions in the book. These go along with UDL principles 3.1 & 6.1 (using background knowledge and guide appropriate goal setting). (edited) 6y
Thayes1787 Creating a bio cube is a great and fun way to write positive things about one‘s self and share with the class! Http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/student-interactive/cube-30057.html

This Geisel award winning F book by Ethan Long, follows some funny birds as they all try to reach new “heights,” literally! It features colorful and cheerful illustrations, and interactive fold-out flaps that reveal a surprise that will have any preK or kindergarten class laughing out loud! I recommend this book for RA or SR, the text is large enough to be seen for students to read along. #ucflae3414sp18
