He had some disputable political opinions and I am not too big a fan of VS Naipaul‘s novels but I love his travelogues. His journey through Islamic (non Arabic) countries in Among the Believers and its follow-up, Beyond Belief, teached me much about Islamic culture.
Thanks to The Turn in the South my first trip to the US was a roadtrip through Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama, one I‘ll never forget.

RIP

Lcsmcat I found his A House for Mr. Biswas to be extremely funny. But like many funny people, his humor seemed to hide a deep sadness. RIP. 6y
BarbaraBB @Lcsmcat I haven‘t read that one yet. Sounds good! 6y
RidgewayGirl A Turn in the South is an extraordinary book. And I loved ABend in the River and its sequel, Half a Life. But his misogyny and arrogance have certainly colored my love for those books. 6y

Pickpick

I'm going to learn about Iran and it's Muslim culture. It's the best book which described the culture of Iran perfectly..
