Seven Surrenders
Seven Surrenders: A Novel | Ada Palmer
11 posts | 15 read | 12 to read
A cornucopia of dazzling, sharp ideas set in rich, wry prose that rewards rumination with layers of delight. Provocative, erudite, inventive, resplendent. Ken Liu, author of The Grace of Kings In a future of near-instantaneous global travel, of abundant provision for the needs of all, a future in which no one living can remember an actual war...a long era of stability threatens to come to an abrupt end. For known only to a few, the leaders of the great Hives, nations without fixed location, have long conspired to keep the world stable, at the cost of just a little blood. A few secret murders, mathematically planned. So that no faction can ever dominate, and the balance holds. And yet the balance is beginning to give way. Mycroft Canner, convict, sentenced to wander the globe in service to all, knows more about this conspiracy the than he can ever admit. Carlyle Foster, counselor, sensayer, has secrets as well, and they burden Carlyle beyond description. And both Mycroft and Carlyle are privy to the greatest secret of all: Bridger, the child who can bring inanimate objects to life. Shot through with astonishing invention, Ada Palmer's Seven Surrenders is the next movement in one of the great SF epics of our time. Seven Surrenders veers expertly between love, murder, mayhem, parenthood, theology, and high politics. I haven't had this much fun with a book in a long time. Max Gladstone, author of Three Parts Dead Terra Ignota 1. Too Like the Lightning 2. Seven Surrenders 3. The Will to Battle At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Definite pick. Read this right after Too Like The Lightning. They really should've been one book, many quirks and issues I had with book 1 get resolved by book 2, as they're two halves of one narrative. I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here.

Okay, this follow up to the first book is so so needed. So many pieces in Too Like The Lightning get resolved here. Pieces that had no pay off in book 1 are getting their payoff. I'd highly recommend reading the two back to back.

Haven‘t read anywhere near as much as I normally would at this point in my holiday, for two reasons:
1️⃣ Seem to have more last minute preparations than usual, but more importantly
2️⃣ I can‘t tear myself away from CONTROL. It‘s rare for me to find a video game I really love, so I‘m trying to enjoy the ride. But I know that part of the reason I‘m playing instead of reading is my lack of desire to pick up Under the Volcano. Ugh!

TheAromaofBooks The combo of addictive game and book you aren't enthused about can be detrimental to book progress! I've been there! 5y

Xmas holiday reading extravaganza officially begins now! I have two weeks off and want to read as much as possible.

I won‘t get to all of these but I like to have a large stack to choose from. I‘ve been reading both Under the Volcano and We Came Naked and Barefoot for weeks and haven‘t had time to concentrate, so I‘d like to get those squared away as soon as I can. But for now I‘m starting the tagged because I‘m craving something new.
