From James DeMonaco, the writer/director of The Purge film franchise, comes the provocative and terrifying last stand of a lone outpost of women in the wake of a deadly pandemic. Allie Hilts was still in high school when a fire at a top-secret research facility released an air-borne pathogen that quickly spread to every male on the planet, killing most. Allie witnessed every man she ever knew be consumed by fearsome symptoms: scorching fevers and internal bleeding, madness and uncontrollable violence. The world crumbled around her. No man was spared, and the few survivors were irrevocably changed. They became disturbingly strong, aggressive, and ferocious. Feral. Three years later, Allie has joined a group of hardened survivors in an isolated, walled-in encampment. Outside the guarded walls the ferals roam free, and hunt. Allie has been noticing troubling patterns in the ferals' movements, and a disturbing number of new faces in the wild. Something catastrophic is brewing on the horizon, and time is running out. The ferals are coming, and there is no stopping them. With Feral, writer/director James DeMonaco and acclaimed novelist Brian Evenson have created a challenging and entertaining novel of timely horror and exhilarating suspense.

A week ago I attended a zoom event with various Penguin Randomhouse horror novelists (which was amazing!) and in the comment section they mentioned mystery boxes you could purchase on their site. Well, of course I had to get one! I got all of this stuff for $25! I haven‘t heard of the first 2 books in the pic but they sound interesting. The journal and pin are adorable and the booklet at the bottom is a sample of Devolution! So happy!

A pretty good read. An end-of-days story, where a pathogen has turned all men into ferocious, animal-like creatures. The women who survived struggle to rebuild and fight off the "ferals".
It's not especially frightening, but it's well-written.

Mehso-so

Today I posted my review of Feral. The book was fine, I just think my expectations were too high. Lots of good narrators in this one.

About halfway done. Not bad but not something that hasn't been done numerous times before. The narration is excellent though, nice range of female narrators, including a couple personal faves.

The main character Allie is well developed and an emotional character. Her mental toughness is balanced by the love for her sister and her loyalty to the community she is protecting. Each of the female characters add to the story that makes the community work in the disaster they are living in. Although this book is marketed as adult horror, I feel this falls into YA and will be very successful with those who like The Hunger Games and Divergent.
