This has such a low rating, but I loved it. I found its gaps and omissions and its refusal to provide any but the most fleeting of answers both honest and compelling. The prose was both simple and artful at times both the writing and the story were quite searingly beautiful

Moray_Reads @saresmoore I can almost see why others didn't take to it. There are large (deliberate) gaps and much is left open to speculation but it spoke to me and I thought it worked beautifully 7y

so-so

A book of two halves. Started well with an intriguing set up & a novel take on time travel then builds nicely. Loved the Montparnasse section & despite sombre tone thought it might be something special. It lost it totally half way through. It went from sombre to melancholy to downright depressing. There was little character development & too much annoying navel gazing. Didn't buy the Tommy Rust character at all.

readingjedi The lack of explanations seemed less and less mysterious and more like the author hadn't bothered to think it through! I wanted some sort of origin story. 8y

readingjedi The vagueness of time and place grated on me too! The frozen beach section was very evocative though. 8y

I wish I could say that I enjoyed 'The Immortals' and it pains me to rate a book two out of five, it truly does. I could not connect to any of the characters and I found the story long winded at times. I do agree with other reviewers that the writing was beautiful.
