NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, SLATE, AND THE THELEGRAPH This brilliant new novel by an American master, the author of Ragtime, The Book of Daniel, Billy Bathgate, and The March, takes us on a radical trip into the mind of a man who, more than once in his life, has been the inadvertent agent of disaster. Speaking from an unknown place and to an unknown interlocutor, Andrew is thinking, Andrew is talking, Andrew is telling the story of his life, his loves, and the tragedies that have led him to this place and point in time. And as he confesses, peeling back the layers of his strange story, we are led to question what we know about truth and memory, brain and mind, personality and fate, about one another and ourselves. Written with psychological depth and great lyrical precision, this suspenseful and groundbreaking novel delivers a voice for our timesfunny, probing, skeptical, mischievous, profound. Andrews Brain is a surprising turn and a singular achievement in the canon of a writer whose prose has the power to create its own landscape, and whose great topic, in the words of Don DeLillo, is the reach of American possibility, in which plain lives take on the cadences of history. Praise for Andrews Brain Too compelling to put down . . . fascinating, sometimes funny, often profound . . . Andrew is a provocatively interesting and even sympathetic character. . . . Bailedbailed

I bailed. I felt like I was reading some crazy person‘s memoir. Not my thing.

LiterRohde I was almost there myself. It was short enough I made it and interesting enough to just make so-so. Oops. I see you stacked it from me. Sorry. (edited) 7y
Laura317 @LiterRohde I‘ve had the book for a few months. I had a difficult time following what was going on. Maybe in audio it is easier? 7y
LiterRohde Maybe. I didn‘t really have trouble following it on audio. I would just every now and again get annoyed by the narrator‘s voice. It was a four hour audiobook. You might not like it much better as a story. But at least you might be able to follow it. Like I said, it was only so-so for me. But using the quote I posted to filter the story through (the one idea about a man being trapped in his brain like it‘s prison) was enough to allow me to finish. 7y

Starting this tonight. I‘ve never read this author before, but I‘ve heard of some of his works. I‘m hoping this is one I‘ll enjoy.

LiterRohde Reviewed and posted on this one. Listened to the audiobook. Quick read. I liked it but not my favorite. 7y

Mehso-so

The basic story of Andrew was pretty interesting. It was a kind of character study. A look inside the mind of an intelligent but tortured man. However, the political commentary frame did not work for me. It seemed forced. Also, I had a difficult time with the narrator of the audiobook.

Pickpick

Doctorow's beautiful mastery of language and ability to weave a compelling narrative shine masterfully in this novel. Andrew is one of the most interesting and insightful characters I have read in a long time, and I could not put this book down. This is just another example of what makes Doctorow one of the best authors of our time.
