Greek Gods and Heroes
Greek Gods and Heroes | Robert Graves
3 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
In the ancient past, the Gods and Goddesses of ancient Greece lived on Mount Olympus, and ruled the world of mortals. Famous heroes shaped the course of history, beautiful women drew the gazes of gods and men alike, and the gods were both fickle in their favors and breathtakingly generous to those they smiled upon. From Midas tragic gift to the exploits of Hercules and the curse of Pandora, renowned classicist and historical novelist Robert Graves brings the legends of ancient Greece to life in a lively, accessible way thats sure to appeal to everyone; from children to adults, and from casual readers to serious scholars.

Mehso-so

An easy collection of myth stories, a la Edith Hamilton, but much of this conflicts with other versions (like, ALL versions) I‘m familiar with - and I‘m not new to this game. For instance, Athena was found wandering as a child and Zeus just decided to claim her and made up the head-springing story, but Poseidon also tried to claim parentage? Um, that‘s different. It was worth the $.25 I paid for it.

Clare-Dragonfly Wow. Very strange. I‘ve thought of Graves as one of the big names in Greek mythology for English readers. 🤔 And inconsistent mythology is one thing (of course there wil be different stories over many years) but trying to make it fit with the known myth by saying Zeus made up that story? So weird. 4y
ravenlee @Clare-Dragonfly right? This is from 1960. I need to check the vintage on his other works (I have a few on my shelves but haven‘t read them). Maybe there‘s an evolution? 4y

While looking through my #mythology books I found this illustration from 1960 of Heracles (aka Hercules), who is known for strength and courage #muscles #aprilbookshowers 💪🏼 For anyone interested in Greek mythology, Graves is good for an imaginative retelling but he lacks accuracy.
