~30% in and I‘m done
This erotic painting set the world awobble back in the day. “The subjects bold pose, provocative dress, and decadent pallor shocked the public”. 🙈 In the 1880s John Singer Sargent put his career on the line when his painting was displayed in Paris. This is a story about the scandalous woman portrayed here. She sounds like a fun girl. I hope the writing holds up.
The author originally wanted to write a biography of Virginie Gautreau, the subject of John Singer Sargent's painting Madame X, but there was not enough original source material. I've always been very struck by this painting and enjoyed reading the author's imagining of Virginie's life. Also, it was a very interesting historical period.
I only found out about this book because someone posted about it here on Litsy. I can't remember who it was but thank you! I love John Singer Sargent and I love the Madame X painting so it was a no brainer to give the book a try. Very little is known about the real woman who posed for the picture but I thought the author did a great job weaving the pieces together to tell an interesting story of her life. It was a very enjoyable read.
John Singer Sargent is one of my favorite artists and Madame X is my favorite painting. I so enjoyed this story of the creation of this portrait of Virginie Gautreau. Always visit this great work of art when I go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. #artrelatedbooks #seasonreading2016
