The Art of Frugal Hedonism
The Art of Frugal Hedonism: A Guide to Spending Less While Enjoying Everything More | Annie Raser-Rowland, Adam Grubb
10 posts | 54 read | 2 reading | 6 to read
It sounds too good to be true. You can save money and the world, inoculate yourself against many of the ills of modern life, andenjoy everything more on both the sensual and profound levels? Preposterous! Yet here is a toolkit to help you do just that. A tweak here, a twiddle there; every strategy inThe Art Of Frugal Hedonismhas been designed to help you target the most important habits of mind and action needed for living frugally but hedonistically. Apply a couple, and you ll definitely have a few extra dollars in your pocket and enjoy more sunsets. Apply the lot, and you ll wake up one day and realise that you re happier, wealthier, fitter, and more in lust with life than you d ever thought possible."

Borrow this from a library if you can, skim it for what applies and ignore the rest. I liked the authors‘ attitude but recognize that some things won‘t work everywhere. For example, in a lot of places in America, you just can‘t reliably get to work without a car. I‘m lucky to use the bus but it‘s not possible in so many places! I appreciated other ideas though and am glad I borrowed this.

“A life liberally strewn with satisfying mini-challenges” Haven‘t finished this yet but so far so good! I like the authors‘ attitude and approach!

Smrloomis Also this gem: “Most people love the feeling of getting something new, but forget it can come as easily from discovery as from consumption.” 4d

I was so hoping I would enjoy this, but we are a neurodivergent family and I couldn‘t even get past the forward. Which is ok. This book will be beneficial for others, but I find it hard to continue a book once rubbed the wrong way.

Bookwomble So disappointing when an author is insensitive/ignorant 😕 4mo
Darklunarose @Bookwomble most likely just completely unaware of how essential tech is (yes even at the dinner table) of ND families. I get enough judgement looks when we eat out, I‘m not gonna read them too. Even I use my phone to stim and focus when out and about. And my iPad when focusing on a movie. 4mo

Clare-Dragonfly I know what you mean about it being hard to continue a book when it‘s rubbed you the wrong way. 😕 4mo

This was a fun read, with advise and reflections not just on how to live a more simple and happier life, but also on why. The authors are funny and frankly quite convincing (even if I doubt I‘d dumpster dive or make a roadkill stew), there are a some tips that seem a bit too radical, but most are doable. I got this book from the library, but I think I‘ll buy it too for the times when I need a better living pep talk.

I LOVED this read! The authors have a lighthearted and funny approach to living life more simply. Some of the ideas might be a bit much for most but the majority of the book has more practical ideas for the beginner. I loved how they educated while entertaining and educating! Great book to read if you‘re looking to save money, live more simply, and more meaningfully.

This was an interesting read. Not really what I expected - I was thinking there would be more tips and out of the ordinary ideas, but it was not the case. That said, it is a great introduction to frugalism, and I appreciate that they understand that people have passions they are willing to spend more on if they cut down in other areas.

The authors claim to live on AU$105 a week (including bills but not rent/mortgage) each (apparently the national average is about AU$440 per person) - I'm hoping to learn some things!

LauraBeth You'll still buy books, right? 😀 8y
saresmoore What @LauraBeth said! I've cut my budget drastically over years of ridiculously low incomes, but I've always somehow found extra money for books. :) 8y
PurpleyPumpkin Sounds interesting! 8y

Marchpane AU105? That's low. I wonder how hard they have to work to save that $335 each week? 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @saresmoore @LauraBeth, of course! (Budget cuts in other areas) 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag It is low! I suspect that it involves a lot of growing your own food and having skills on the sewing machine... @Marchpane 8y
Marchpane Mmm, I think you are right (and walking/cycling everywhere because transport = $$$). But those things still have a cost, you're just paying with your time instead of money. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Marchpane, well, I just read a paragraph that talked about foraging for food (in the wild/from a dumpster) and eating roadkill.., so I'm not sure that I've learnt anything that I can apply to my own life yet! (It's not just about saving money - it's also about living a meaningful life that isn't necessarily driven by society expectations) 8y
Marchpane Roadkill? No thanks! I'm very interested in the other aspects though, about striving for meaning and reducing consumption etc. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Marchpane, I made this face 😖 at the mention of road kill. I'd love to be able to grow some of my own vegetables but I live in an apartment without a balcony so it's just not currently plausible. My track record for remaining interested in non fiction isn't high but it is an interesting subject so I shall try. 8y
