In a gritty, romantic modern fairy tale from the author of Break and Gone, Gone, Gone, Rudy's life is flipped upside down when his family moves to a remote, magical island in a last attempt to save his sick younger brother, Dylan; but while Dylan recovers, Rudy sinks deeper and deeper into his loneliness. Simultaneous.

Pickpick

This book was not at all what I thought it would be. I bought it years ago and by the time I picked it up to read it I had no idea what it was about anymore, and I was expecting something heavier. What it is is actually YA, but less predictable and obvious than the usual stuff. Overall pretty good.

The fact that I had dental work done this morning is not why I picked this modern fairytale from my fave #YA author Hannah Moskowitz as my next read, but the timing makes me giggle nonetheless.

“I ignore people who need me and latch on to people who don't. I dive into every other world except my own just because I want something more glamorous than my real life. I do destructive shit so a stupid hypocritical fish will like me. I fall for fish instead of girls.”

So this was maybe the weirdest book I‘ve ever read. But not necessarily in a bad way? I haven‘t decided yet. Get back to me when I‘ve fully processed fish rape pregnancies.

“I close my eyes and listen to the ocean.
I'm thinking about sailing, to England or maybe France. The way the wind would feel on my face and the sound of his voice screaming my name through his laughter. The waves would crash like applause. God, I remember when I used to be afraid of the ocean.”
