Letty Fox: Her Luck | Christina Stead
4 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
Love, lust, and commitment crash and scatter in this comedic masterpiece From the stunning and provocative mind of Christina Stead comes the addictively blunt character of Letty Fox. Letty spins between New York City and London during her chaotic upbringing and entry into adulthood, which spans the Great Depression and the Second World War. She is determined to create a life for herselfone built upon equal parts work and play, men and sexwhile her parents struggle with their own romantic entanglements. Frank and comedic like few characters before her (or since), Letty sets out to find a lasting, committed relationship amidst the buzz of Manhattan. With its vibrant characters and masterful voice, Letty Fox is a spirited coming-of-age story from one of the twentieth centurys essential novelists.

#12booksofchristmas @Andrew65 July
I've put this down for July because it had been sat on my shelf for ages and I'm still not sure how much I enjoyed it as it was sprawling, small print and lots of pages. The story of the life of Letty was however an interesting look at female experience and the USA from the 20s to the 40s ,a fascinating era. And of course who can resist virago covers and those lovely green spines.

Andrew65 Sounds a good read, don‘t you hate small print.🕵️‍♂️ 2y

Pickpick

Hard to caregorise this story of letty fox from teenager to young woman in New York from the late 1920s to 1945. Chaotic + comic the book shows in 1st person a girl exploring her sexuality amid a host of odd characters incl friends family and lovers. Radical in political thought letty is also flighty but determined. While at times I struggled with the style + length I put it down pleased to have read it + fascinated by the author's biography ⬇️

andrew61 Interestingly on a doc abt virago I heard someone say stead was Carmen calils favourite author. The biog references her radicalism and writing style as well as her femininism. While the read was demanding I will definitely try her again and I do love the virago covers , this one Augustus john 'the artists daughter ' in national gallery Melbourne captures in my imagination Letty arrogant, but vulnerable , Stead was Australian by birth . 2y
kwmg40 I too love the VMC covers! 2y

About to start this book. I had not heard of the author, but, apparently, she was very well respected and I should know who she is. From what I can tell, her books are tragic. We will see.
