Here‘s the deal: I‘ve tried to read 4 different fiction books over the past 2 weeks, including the new Liane Moriarty because I adore her books, and all I want is to read essays and memoirs.

My usual breakdown is 60-70% fiction and 30-40% nonfiction. I don‘t remember ever being this stymied. Can anyone relate? Looking for a little company.

RamsFan1963 I'm going through one right now. The last three fiction books I've read have been just so-so at best, while I've really enjoyed several non-fiction books. I'm taking a break on fiction until 2019. 6y
JenReadsAlot So interesting you just posted this as I realized I've mainly been reading, and wanting to read nonfiction! 6y
catiewithac I switched over to mostly nonfiction a few years ago! I read only a few fiction books now. 6y

LA_Mead I usually alternate between fiction and non fiction... 6y
Trashcanman For me it's the opposite, I primarily read non fiction. Taking a slight break from it to fiction at the moment. 6y
violabrain After I read A Little Life, I couldn‘t read fiction for about a month because that book was so amazing and heartbreaking, it made everything else seem trite. I read science books for that month until was ready for fiction again. 6y
Notafraidofwords Yes. If I‘m anxious, afraid or too stimulated with thoughts—-I can‘t do fiction all that well. I switch completely to non fiction. Fiction requires for my brain to feel somewhat at peace. 6y
Megabooks @RamsFan1963 It seems like there have been a lot of good nonfiction books this year and last year as well. I may do the same as you! 6y
Gezemice I have had that happen, although usually I just need a change and go back after. Although it depends on what you mean by fiction. I often can‘t read “serious”, i.e. literary fiction, but most genre fiction is fine. I normally alternate like @JenReadsAlot 6y
Megabooks @JenReadsAlot There are a lot of great options! I hope you enjoy what you try! 6y
Megabooks @catiewithac Awesome! I‘ve given up a lot of genres, but haven‘t taken the full plunge yet. What‘s your favorite type of nonfiction? 6y
Megabooks @LA_Mead That‘s pretty standard for me as well, but it‘s usually not quite even. 6y
Megabooks @Trashcanman Have you found anything good in fiction? What‘s your favorite type of nonfiction? 6y
Megabooks @violabrain I haven‘t read A Little Life yet, but I‘ve heard amazing things about it. What was your favorite science book? 6y
MelissaSue81 Hmm... I don‘t think so, but I‘m a big fiction reader. I have times when I can‘t read certain KINDS of fiction. 6y
Megabooks @Notafraidofwords So agree with you! My brain feels jumbled and jumpy. I‘m coming out of over a year of severe depression. I can‘t keep the characters and plot lines straight and that‘s frustrating. 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Not me, I love fiction. But I have to change up the subgenres all the time. I don't read enough nonfiction tbh. 6y
Megabooks @Gezemice I tend to lean towards heavier fiction, so that may be part of my problem too. Perhaps I should try some light “women‘s fiction”. A beach read or something. 6y
Megabooks @MelissaSue81 That‘s definitely happened to me too. I haven‘t been able to read a thriller for months. (edited) 6y
Megabooks @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I‘m planning on doing the nonfiction challenge again next year. It‘s just a little motivation to read one nonfiction book each month. Maybe you‘d enjoy joining in? 6y
CampbellTaraL Earlier this year I went through a phase of fiction blah. But no biggie, really, there is a neverending supply of nonfiction out. 😃 6y
catiewithac @Megabooks I‘m a big fan of history and memoir! 6y
Megabooks @taraWritesSci That‘s true! There are so many types and some great authors! 6y
Books-R-Love Im in a phase where reading nonfiction seems like the less heavier choice on my mind. I usually have to give my all when I‘m reading fiction and just wish to read it in a single setting, but with non fiction I can take my time to soak in all the information so finishing a book in a week doest feel as bad. Not sure if I made sense there, but I hope to get into more fiction just to change things up as I‘m mostly interested in nonfiction. 6y
Flaneurette I‘ve been reading a lot of short stories lately because I just don‘t have the mental bandwidth to concentrate on most novels lately, so yeah me too. 6y
Gezemice @Megabooks I don‘t do “women‘s fiction”, but I love a good thriller, fantasy, or a humorous book like anything from Terry Pratchett. I just finished The Firm by John Grisham, and it was so absorbing, it got me over my reading slump! I am stuck on The New Jim Crow at the moment - excellent nonfiction but it is a difficult read. It made me so angry.... (edited) 6y
Megabooks @catiewithac I like both of those too! 6y
CouronneDhiver Sure, definitely. I‘m all about phases and mood, where reading is concerned... which is super weird given that NONE of the rest of my life runs on those kinds of terms 6y
Megabooks @Notnightingale You made sense! I kind of lump narrative nonfiction with fiction in that I too want to finish it in a few sittings as possible. But essays, which are a definite fav, are much easier to stretch out if necessary. 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Megabooks @Flaneurette I love short stories! I have so many collections knocking around the house. The only fiction book I have from the library now is Kevin Wilson‘s collection that came out this year. 6y
Megabooks @Gezemice Those are two genres I‘m not reading right now. I‘m still sick of thrillers from the BOTM challenge last year and I‘ve never found fantasy that works for me. I wish I liked genre fiction more because it seems other people find it fun and engrossing. Occasionally I‘ll read sci fi and there are some authors I really enjoy. Also YA can be a nice, light change occasionally. 6y
Megabooks @CouronneDhiver Awesome! I never used to be so moody about reading. Maybe it‘s an age thing for me??? 6y
tournevis There was never a time when I wouldn't. When I was prepping for my comps a bazillion years ago, I couldn't read fiction because I was busy reading 15000 pages of academic writing!!!! 6y
Megabooks @violabrain it is now in my TBR! Thank you 😊 6y
Megabooks @tournevis Wow! That is a lot!!! 6y
tournevis @Megabooks Yes it was! I had three comps, but one was co-directed, which meant double the readings. I swore never to do that to my students. 6y

Pickpick

Cute f/f romance! Badass businesswoman Kenya is successful in almost all aspects of her life except for romance. She ends up with two romantic interests - a wealthy Italian businesswoman who can give her anything she wants (but may be a philanderer) and an attractive bartender/music producer who is fun and honest. She tries to convince herself she wants the financially successful woman but can't deny her feelings for bartender Simone. 😳
