ONE OF LIBRARY JOURNAL'S BEST MYSTERIES OF THE YEAR In 1995, Nate Romanowski was in a Special Forces unit abroad when his commander, John Nemecek, did something terrible. Now the high-ranking government official and cold-blooded sociopath is determined to eliminate anyone who knows about it like Nate, who s hidden himself away in Wyoming s Bighorn Mountains. And he knows exactly how Nemecek will do it by targeting Nate's friends to draw him out. That includes his friend, game warden Joe Pickett, and Pickett s entire family. The only way to fight back is outside the law. Nate knows he can do it, but he isn't sure about his straight-arrow friend. And all their lives could depend on it."

This is book 12 in the series. I usually take time in between reading each book but 11 ended with a cliffhanger I had to hear more about. I am still enjoying the series about game warden Joe Pickett and like how the characters keep developing. I believe there are 21 in the series right now—I‘ll keep on reading them.

Twelve books into the Joe Pickett series and they keep getting better and better. If you love Nate Romanowski, the mysterious off-grid falconer and Joe Pickett‘s best friend, you‘ll LOVE this installment. I learned a lot of his backstory and so much about him is more clear now. I read until my eyes burned last night and didn‘t breath fully at all throughout the story. Definitely a pageturner and my favorite so far in this series!!

I am torn about this book. I enjoyed the characters and the mystery but found it to be very graphically violent at times. Graphic violence is not my jam. I think that I will try one more book in the series to see if the graphic violence is a pattern or was related to just this story.

“Although there had been little rain and only a few #bursts of fall snow, the thirst of the river cottonwoods for water had subsided as the trees withdrew their appetite and focused inward, preparing for winter. Without thousands of trees sucking water from the Twelve Sleep, the level of the river rose high enough to be navigable again.” #QuotsyMay19

This is why I love this author and this book series. He has decided not to make a tv series after the ideas weren‘t aligning with the books. I have so much respect for him.
