Ax Murders of Saxtown: The Unsolved Crime That Terrorized a Town and Shocked the Nation
Ax Murders of Saxtown: The Unsolved Crime That Terrorized a Town and Shocked the Nation | Nicholas J C Pistor
2 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
An entire household massacred. A family feud. A sheriff found dead. Neighbor turned against neighbor. Reports of ghosts, bounty hunters, deathbed confessions, and legacy fortunes. In 1874, the Saxtown massacre rocked a nation reeling from economic depression and shattered a small German immigrant farming community in Illinois. The murder of the Stelzriede family led investigators through the forests and farmland, chasing footprints, bloody tobacco leaves, and the marks of an ax dragged away from the scene. Nicholas J.C. Pistor s The Ax Murders of Saxtown is a gripping tale of suspense and suspicion that exposes brand new information about the century-old crime and showcases the flaws of the nineteenth-century justice system."

I live about twenty-twenty-five mins from Milstadt IL where this murder took place. This is one of those that was never solved. Very haunting story and one that left me awake at night. If you like true crime reads this is worth picking up.

The @Litsy giveaway today reminded me of a great story of my hometown!! This #ScaryRead for #AllHallowsRead is about a horrific axe murder that took place right down the street from where I grew up!! I grew up on Upper Saxtown instead of plain old Saxtown, and sure, it was like a hundred years ago, but still! The house was for rent once and I toured it. Super creepy!!! And the details this novel brings to light... Shudder.
