The Old Devils
The Old Devils | Kingsley Amis
2 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
Age has done everything except mellow the characters in Kingsley Amis’s The Old Devils, which turns its humane and ironic gaze on a group of Welsh married couples who have been spending their golden years—when “all of a sudden the evening starts starting after breakfast”—nattering, complaining, reminiscing, and, above all, drinking. This more or less orderly social world is thrown off-kilter, however, when two old friends unexpectedly return from England: Alun Weaver, now a celebrated man of Welsh letters, and his entrancing wife, Rhiannon. Long-dormant rivalries and romances are rudely awakened, as life at the Bible and Crown, the local pub, is changed irrevocably. Considered by Martin Amis to be Kingsley Amis’s greatest achievement—a book that “stands comparison with any English novel of the [twentieth] century”—The Old Devils confronts the attrition of ageing with rare candor, sympathy, and moral intelligence.

Pickpick

Charlie, Malcolm, and Peter are comfortably settled into retirement until Alun, a professional TV Welshman, returns to Wales with his charming wife, Rhianna.

It is told from multiple points of view, by each of the old men and most of their wives. And while I do not always enjoy satire, Amis is so good at capturing the vulnerabilities of these rascally men, as well as their ingrained prejudices and sexism, that I was charmed in spite of myself.

BarbaraBB I was a bit disappointed by it, because I loved Lucky Jim so much. But I read that a long long time ago! 7y
Liz_M I should probably add stars to my reviews -- it was just barely a pick at 3.5 starts. Lucky Jim wasn't my sort of humour, so expectations weren't very high for this. 7y
BarbaraBB I often hesitate between a pick and a so-so (especially because the so-so is accompanied by a thumb down). The stars are more accurate! 7y

A long time ago I read Lucky Jim and I remember it as the funniest book I had read until then. So I looked forward to this novel, that was supposed to be funny too. Well, maybe it was... for aging Welshmen in the 80s perhaps. For me now it did do little. I sometimes smiled, but overall I was mostly irritated by all the booze all of those 'devils' are drinking continually. #booker #1001books #manbooker
