In this compelling and poignant debut novel, a woman skilled at caring for animals must learn to mend the broken relationships in her family. For veterinarian Geneva Novak, animals can be easier to understand than people. Theyre also easier to forgive. But when her mother, Helen, is injured in a vodka-fueled accident, its up to Geneva to give her the care she needs.Since her teens, Geneva has kept her self-destructive mother at arms length. Now, with two slippery teenagers of her own at home, the last thing she wants is to add Helen to the mix. But Genevas husband convinces her that letting Helen live with them could be her golden chance to repair their relationship.Geneva isnt expecting her mother to change anytime soon, but she may finally get answers to the questions shes been asking for so long. As the truth about her family unfolds, however, Geneva may find secrets too painful to bear and too terrible to forgive.CONVERSATION GUIDE INCLUDED

It was ok but not really what I was expecting. I didn‘t really enjoy this too much. Don‘t let the cute puppy on the cover fool you. Doesn‘t have a lot to do with animals.

#readjanuary #thiscovermakesnosense okay @SonjaYoerg you KNEW I would be posting this cover for today's #readjanuary! 😁 This cover has absolutely nothing to do with the contents of the book. Nothing. Proving the designer didn't bother reading the book, subsequently doing it a serious disservice. This book has nothing to do with a cute puppy hanging over a fence.

Pruzy Makes me wonder if the story even features a dog! 8y
SonjaYoerg @Pruzy The main character is a vet and there are six named dogs in the book that play roles, including allegorical ones. That said, it is not a dog book. 8y
SonjaYoerg @Penny_LiteraryHoarders I'm not sure what the publisher was thinking other than puppies sell books, but I'd much rather not have a cover that needs to be explained. 8y

Penny_LiteraryHoarders @SonjaYoerg 👍🏻👍🏻😁 8y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders I think the contents are "heavier" in the book and the cover is a major contrast - I didn't think it the best choice. IMHO ??? 8y
Pruzy @SonjaYoerg Thanks for the explanation! 8y
SonjaYoerg Especially when you get reviews that say "wanted more dog and less people." 8y

Pickpick

A story told in 3 generational points of view. It is family secrets and how the past affects our interpretation of the present.

The past wasn't a guest you could ask to leave when you tired of its company. No, the past put up its feet and meant to stay.

Packed full of intense family issues & written well; Title is perfect & applicable to multiple facets of the story; Wish cover dog looked more like a Great Dane/Lab mix instead of a purebred chocolate lab but that's just the animal scientist in me!
