Where We Once Belonged
Where We Once Belonged | Sia Figiel
3 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Fiction. A bestseller in New Zealand and winner of the prestigious Commonwealth Prize, Sia Figiel's debut marks the first time a novel by a Samoan woman has been published in the United States. Figiel uses the traditional Samoan storytelling form of su'ifefiloi to talk back to Western anthropological studies on Samoan women and culture. Told in a series of linked episodes, this powerful and highly original narrative follows thirteen-year-old Alofa Filiga as she navigates the mores and restrictions of her village and comes to terms with her own search for identity. A story of Samoan PUBERTY BLUES, in which Gauguin is dead but Elvis lives on -- Vogue Australia. A storytelling triumph -- Elle Australia.

Friday‘s purchases at the church garage sale for the grand total of $1 each. Stew also bought me a piece of art for an early Valentine‘s Day present. This spa bath is at Harrington where we are for an early Valentine‘s Day celebration. It‘s been a blissful weekend even though it has rained the whole time. We still got out & about for some nice walks & to the lighthouse, ate some yummy food, drank delicious wine & got some reading in of course.

Rissreads I haven‘t had a bath in a long time, that looks divine 😊 5y

Chelleo How are you enjoying it so far? 7y
mabith @Chelleo I'm really liking it! I had to take another break to finish an early reviewer book, but happy to be back to it. It's that great thing of a window into another culture while also being a mirror of teenage girlhood. 7y
