A sensational YA science fiction debut from an exciting new British author! Just because she's confined to the planet, doesn't mean she can't reach for the stars. 2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. Eighteen-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, she has been abandoned by her parents. She can't travel to other worlds, but she can watch their vids, and she knows all the jokes they make. She's an "ape," a "throwback," but this is one ape girl who won't give in. Jarra makes up a fake military background for herself and joins a class of norms who are on Earth for a year of practical history studies excavating the dangerous ruins of the old cities. She wants to see their faces when they find out they've been fooled into thinking an ape girl was a norm. She isn't expecting to make friends with the enemy, to risk her life to save norms, or to fall in love. From the Hardcover edition.

Perusing my shelves and I found this cute duology! The premise is that it‘s the year 2788, and only the handicapped live on Earth, making our main character whos immune system can‘t survive on other planets an “ape” girl or a “throwback”. BUT she is determined to prove her worth by hacking into the military system and joins an excavation team full of “norms” exploring old cities, to show the others she is worth more than being thrown away. 🌎

This book is not a good book. It deals with internalized racism in the Guise of a world with multiple species, including several species of humans. I don't know something about it just didn't sit right.

My immune system can‘t survive anywhere other than Earth. I‘m in prison, and it‘s a life sentence.

This was a fun read, but the author definitely subscribes to the "more is more" maxim. From the fantabulously accomplished heroine to the over-the-top ending. Edwards is making a solid point about discrimination, but there are too many cherries on top and not enough cake.

"You'd have see it to understand, but it was seriously zan. We were all grazzed to discover Keon actually had some talent."
I am only on page 22, but the let's-create-futurism-by-adding-random-slang-words-with-the-letter-z is really annoying me.
Am I too old for this book?
