Gold Fame Citrus: A Novel | Claire Vaye Watkins

Pickpick

I am finally forced to put down some thoughts on this book, because of a monthly prompt. It starts in California and has a few odd sex scenes - Californication. Too perfect to pass up....👇

LiterRohde I say I am forced, because I think I like this book. But why? I‘ve had months to think and I‘m still not sure. The book mostly made me mad. At one point, I wanted to throw it across the room (I was listening to the audiobook, so cooler heads prevailed when the thoughts of buying a new iPhone entered the picture)....👇 6y
LiterRohde The characters were not all that likable, the story was bleak and, at times, disturbing. Yet, the setting - a near future California devastated by drought - was fully engrossing and compelling, and the prose was beautiful. I still remember when the title was woven into the story. Brilliant....👇 6y
LiterRohde So something about this book, with its flawed characters and captivating setting, rang true for me. I think , in the end, it was that people will be people - good, bad, indifferent - no matter what is going on in the world. It‘s difficult to change. It‘s hard to figure out who you are. It feels impossible to outrun your past. All the forces of control that exist now - parents, jobs, roles, religion, to name a few - will still exist then. 6y

TracyReadsBooks Great review! 6y
LiterRohde @TracyReadsBooks Thanks. I try my best. 6y
Megabooks Great review, even though I felt very different about the book! 😉👏🏻 6y
LiterRohde @Megabooks I commented in that very thread of which you speak. You and @Cinfhen did not have a good time with this book! I knew I liked it at that time (4 months ago) but I couldn‘t put it in words. It‘s taken this long for me to think about and digest. And I still would not have written about it had it not been for the prompt. (edited) 6y
Megabooks @LiterRohde Sometimes it‘s hard to articulate why you have feelings about a book. Station Eleven is my all-time favorite book, and I can articulate superficial reasons for it, the non-linear timeline, Shakespeare, Star Trek, but there‘s something more about it that I can‘t access in a post or review. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
LiterRohde @Megabooks Loved Station Eleven. 6y
BarbaraBB This sounds so interesting. Thank you for writing about it, I‘m happy the prompt made you and will check out this book. Great review. 6y
Cinfhen I might still own this book @BarbaraBB or I may have gifted it to @TrishB I can‘t remember 🤦‍♀️anyway, I thought it started out really strong and I agree the writing was brilliant but somewhere along the way the book totally nosedived for me. Such an articulate review @LiterRohde I wish I walked away with the same feelings but I felt like the author lost her focus. Like @Megabooks I thought Station 11 was PERFECT 🤷‍♀️ 6y
TrishB @Cinfhen no- you told me to stay away from this one! 6y
Cinfhen Ha @TrishB I‘m pretty sure you would bail!!!! 6y
TNbookworm Great review, although I did not care for this book. 6y
