I‘ve started this one. Nothing has really happened yet , but I feel very uneasy… so far so good 👍🏻

BarbaraBB I just read this too. The suspense!! I think @Billypar recommended it. A real good Lennon again! 4mo
Billypar @BarbaraBB Yeah, this was a good one. It does make you feel very uneasy, and the tension keeps ratcheting up as it goes. 3mo

Pickpick

Eric Loesch, a private man with a shadowy past, returns to his childhood home in rural NY where he purchases and renovates a derelict house with steely determination. The adjacent woods seem to beckon him and he discovers a gothic castle at the centre of his land that he appears not to own.
This intriguing and strange narrative evokes the question of how much is real or representative of Eric‘s state of mind.

BarbaraBB @Billypar @sarahbarnes You were right Vinny, another great Lennon read. Just more proof we must read all his books! 5mo
Billypar Glad you liked it! And what a perfect woodsy backdrop - hope you're having a good trip 🌳🌳 5mo

Pickpick

The best way I can describe this is part gothic thriller - part early 2000s U.S. military critique, as strange as that combo sounds. Eric Loesch, a former military officer, returns to his hometown to purchase a large plot of wooded land with a decrepit old house that he plans to restore, and he responds to questions from curious town residents with hostility and paranoia. Naturally, strange events linked to his past start occurring... 👇

Billypar ... but even though what follows seems stitched together from the tropes of much older novels, Lennon breathes new life into them, and I read this compulsively, like a great thriller. But it also has more layers to it. The unlikable main character's voice was eerily authentic, reflecting an American male persona that internalizes military dogma and sees human relationships as not mission-critical. I also liked how the time shifts were handled 👇 6mo
Billypar I get restless from the structure of so many modern novels that alternate between present and past action at regular intervals. Instead, Lennon withholds key details about Eric's past, and the narrative moves at a quick pace, only to flashback later to explain some of the mystery. @BarbaraBB I think I'm going to follow your lead and try to read everything J. Robert Lennon has written based on how much I enjoyed this and Subdivision. 6mo
BarbaraBB That is such a good idea! And I haven‘t read Castle yet but I do have a copy and am now looking forward to it ver much, thank you! My next Lennon will be 6mo

Centique Great review! This sounds wonderful 🙌 5mo
sarahbarnes I haven‘t read this one yet but I love him and am trying to read all of his books. I just found used copies of two of his that I haven‘t read yet. The Funnies and The Light of Falling Stars. 5mo
Billypar @sarahbarnes I think I need to try Broken River next since I've heard so many good things. The GR description for The Funnies just says: "Dust marks on cover and edge of pages. Wear to edges." ? 5mo
sarahbarnes 😂😂 I did like Broken River quite a bit. 5mo

I thought this was clever. Much of the book was done in different styles. That is, much of the book was told directly from the author to the reader, breaking the “fourth wall". I also thought the atmosphere was done well – I definitely pictured the ‘70s hunting lodge: all brown wood paneling with hunted animal heads on the walls and such. But, I also found it quite “literary” and a bit dry. I certainly didn‘t care about the people. Cont in comnts

LibraryCin I did, however, like the twist near the end – that, I definitely didn‘t see coming. I also liked the way things were revealed at the end. 9mo

Bailedbailed

Unfortunately, I had to bail on this arc, mainly due to the 'stage directions'/prompts on reading and interpreting the story, which I found incredibly irritating.

This book took a minute for me to get into it but when I did boy did I. I liked it a whole lot more than I expected. This was definitely not a traditional murder mystery and the author included the reader in the mystery and I liked that. However saying that, I am mad at this book. This book is living rent free in my head. I will definitely be looking for more from this author. Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book.

Bailedbailed

Don't care for the writer's writing style. I don't want to be told what I should be thinking about the mystery while I am reading the book.

Tentative Publishing Date October 24, 2023

Thanks to Netgalley and Knopf for the E-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I thought this was clever. Much of the book was told directly from the author to the reader, breaking the “fourth wall”. We went off on tangents talking about what might happen, traditionally (or not), at various parts of a mystery story. Also, there were tangents that focused on classic mystery authors and stories. Again, I thought clever and very different. Con't in comments...

LibraryCin I also thought the atmosphere was done well. But I also found it quite “literary” and a bit dry. I didn‘t care about the people. I did like the twist near the end – that, I definitely didn‘t see coming. I liked the way things were revealed at the end. Again, the author changed the way he was telling the story, and this time, it was done in the style of a play. I didn‘t mind all the different things going on in how it was told. 1y
