This book disgusted, angered, frustrated and frightened me. Shame on Johnson & Johnson for decades of lies, deceptive marketing practices and outright illegal actions that harmed and killed thousands of people. Shame on the FDA for allowing it. Even the Wall Street Journal is complicit for pushing editorials that outright encouraged it all. This book is a must-read.

Suet624 Off to my library catalog to find a cooy. 1mo
Amiable @Suet624 If you can‘t find it let me know and I‘ll mail you my copy! (edited) 1mo

I will never be buying or using anything made my J&J ever again after reading this. The final chapter‘s call to action is nothing new to anyone paying attention, but the rest of this book is absolutely mind blowing! Johnson & Johnson is a criminal enterprise. Acetaminophen IS factually dangerous, but not for the reasons that are in the headlines.
👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics “If acetaminophen were discovered today, it would never get approval” is all you need to know about this medication. The FDA is a waste of funding, then again, it‘s the drug companies‘ funding so that isn‘t saying much. This is a real eye opener. As a wise person told me when I started: be prepared to be angry. #GardinerHarris #NoMoreTears #audiobook #ReadByTheAuthor 1mo
willaful I've been boycotting them for years, ever since I found out about them covering up the uterine cancer link. Monsters. 1mo
ravenlee Ah! I saw this book on a library display ages ago and forgot to add it to my list. The biggest lie I tell myself is that I don‘t need to write it down, I‘ll remember it. Thank you! 1mo

GingerAntics @willaful @TheBookHippie we haven‘t used anything branded as J&J in years, decades even. We always did generic. I‘m terrified of all the places they have their hands in the cookie jar. They are the parent company of TONS of other companies that make pharmaceuticals and household items. They are a shady bunch. 1mo
GingerAntics @ravenlee @Hooked_on_books turned me onto it. It‘s a great read, but it is infuriating! 1mo
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics they are shady AF 1mo
Hooked_on_books Sounds like your response was similar to mine! What a terrific, infuriating book. I‘m glad it opened my eyes. 1mo
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie Harris compared them to the mafia. It‘s rather appropriate! 1mo
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I didn‘t know how far their tentacles were into so many other companies and how they‘ve shuffled stuff around to other of their companies to avoid taking responsibility. 1mo

GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books only 1/4 of the way through and my mind is BLOWN!!! WTF J&J?! WTF AMERICAN GOVERNMENT!!! 1mo
GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I think we are having the entirely WRONG conversation about acetaminophen right now in America. There are real things to talk about, but of course RFK jr can‘t even find any of those. 1mo

GingerAntics @Hooked_on_books I thought I saw you down here on the floor with me. lol Man this is a trip!!! How did we ever trust these monsters?! Advertising at its finest really. 1mo
Hooked_on_books Yup. I definitely have little to no trust for big companies now, between this and how I‘ve been treated by several of them over the past few years (I am looking squarely at FedEx at the moment). 1mo

I have been reading this 460-page book for 2 months because every chapter makes my blood pressure skyrocket and I have to take a break. And I still have 100 pages to go. The deceitful and illegal marketing practices of Johnson & Johnson throughout many years are absolutely sickening.

Tamra Ugh 2mo
Deblovestoread Wow! I thought I might be done with the opioid crisis after reading Empire of Pain but after reading this paragraph obviously not. 🤯🤬 2mo
Amiable @Deblovestoread And this isn‘t all. Of their 7 top-selling drugs in 2003, J&J used illegal marketing tactics that included bribes, kickbacks and lies to the FDA for 6 of them. 🤬 (edited) 2mo

HO. LY. CRAP. You think the Sacklers are bad? (They are.) Turns out, J&J is even worse. Harris brings the receipts and shows how the company buried data and lied to customers, patients, doctors, and the FDA for DECADES. All in the name of money. Quite frankly, I never want to use another of their products ever again. Tremendous narrative nonfiction.

Soubhiville Wow, it‘s such a trusted company, that‘s awful to hear. I‘ll have to see if my library has this. 2mo
Amiable I‘m 200 pages into this right now and my stomach is roiling in disgust. I just read the section about Risperdal. 😖🤬 2mo
Amiable @Soubhiville The book mentions that —how J&J responded after the Tylenol poisoning incidents in 1982 is what is held up even today in business classes as an example of crisis management and marketing. That‘s what has contributed to their “trusted” reputation. But the things they‘ve done (and not done) since then are truly horrific. 2mo

AmyG Whoa. I had no idea how bad it was. Just placed a hold. (edited) 2mo
Hooked_on_books @Amiable @Soubhiville And the whole time they were getting plaudits for how they handled the Tylenol bit, they‘d already been hiding for over a decade the widespread contamination of their talc with asbestos. And the fact that the talc itself was causing ovarian cancer. And they hid it! 😵‍💫 (edited) 2mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Current front runner for my best nonfiction read of 2025. This is going to piss you off, but it‘s an important read, so please I urge you to pick it up. So many scandals. These companies DO NOT CARE. They just don‘t. Please also add Empire of Pain by the incredible Patrick Radden Keefe to your TBR, if you haven‘t read it yet.

Almost everyone has seen the familiar bottle of baby powder, shampoo and oil, and we know that smell. The Johnson family goes back to their apothecary in the civil war era. Despite one horrific reveal after another, the giant is still thriving today. This book takes a deep dive into the history of this popular American company, revealing the real intention of their products: lies and profit over trust and wellness. Capitalism continues to⬇️

This was a thorough rundown of several J&J scandals. Mostly widely known were the cancer-causing talcum powder and the poisoned Tylenol ones. Harris delves into so many additional areas I didn‘t know about like cancer drugs that killed patients, poor hip joints, false claims about Risperdal, their role in the opioids crisis (they were the main supplier of poppy plants). The things this corporation has been involved with are absolutely horrific.

JoeMo In the final chapter the author did a good job of identifying the company‘s positive contributions to life and society. Overall it seemed like a very fair and well-researched book. To me this is real-life horror that disturbs me more than any horror novel or movie can. #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks 5mo
