I read this book years ago (written in 2007). I have pulled it out to re-read it. Anyone who wants to understand how our global economy works & the labor that is used, this is an eye opening book. Especially now that we are entering a new era of backlash against immigration & migrant workers. Many US companies use modern slave labor as their workforce. It‘s easy to turn a blind eye or blame others if we don‘t know the circumstances.

The debut of fair-trade-certified coffee in the United States in 1999 was an important event. After years of growth, fair-trade-sales in Europe had begun to stagnant and in some cases even decline. The United States consumes an astounding one-fifth of the world‘s coffee—more than any other nation-making coffee the country‘s single most valuable food import. ☕️

As a big admirer, it took me too many years to get around to reading this. No Logo is an account of how corporations began selling brands instead of products, ideas, lifestyles and symbols instead of commodities. With that came the focus group and brands marketed to specific demographics like urban youth who integrated Nike swag into gang culture. Into the 90s, public outcries against sweatshops and environmental degradation awoke a resistance.

Part memoir and part analysis as to the trends toward authoritarianism & Nationalism across the globe by a former member of Obama‘s staff .He doesn‘t shy away from how US policy may also be to blame. Thoughtful analysis . Published when Navalny was still alive but had been poisoned, the one he survived. I weep for the future.

From the moment I was deposited back into civilian life after the Trump inauguration, I felt compelled to get away from what was happening in America.

Audiobook for January. Not sure what to think, but it was much more on the conspiracy than I wanted, but it was interesting learning about the three secretive nondisclosure global groups of power players and discussions of historical development and international policy. Some quasi-espionage investigative journalism stories included. It was both super detailed with lists of members and big picture, without really providing needed clarity.

Started this this morning, which Emma somehow remembered I was after the best part of a year ago - thank you @Oryx !

A trip from the UK to Singapore on a Maersk general cargo ship (a tad bigger than these ‘teensy‘ ships in the docks here - one day I‘ll post a picture to show just how teensy they are 😬), and an insight into the global shipping industry. Fascinating and really well-written- I think I‘m going to enjoy this!

julesG Maybe @Oryx keeps secret ledgers with notes. Or spreadsheets like, @squirrelbrain? 😁😁 13mo
Oryx @julesG I have a drawer of presents and things I'm going to give to people. At any time it might have Xmas gifts, charity shop book finds for the nieces, random things for my mum, and litsy books 13mo
Oryx @rockpools glad you are liking it. I found it really fascinating. 13mo

julesG @Oryx I have a similar drawer, but my gift-giving talent is not as strong as yours. 13mo
squirrelbrain Sounds great! Hmmm @julesG you‘ve given me an idea for a new spreadsheet. 🤣 13mo
rockpools Somewhere in the last few years, I completely lost the ability to social media. Sorry for the non-replies! Loving the idea of a secret ledger @julesG -I might work on that… and I was actually eyeing new drawer-units just before you posted @Oryx. Obviously I need to hit the buy button now. I think you might like this one Helen @squirrelbrain. 13mo
