Continuing my quest into North Korea which always has hovered in the periphery of my mind in regard to world politics. I do appreciate a graphic novel memoir but Delisle seems a bit sarcastic and for lack of a better word, rude, about the culture.

willaful I remember finding Without You There Is No Us very interesting. 3d

Interesting and disturbing.

Amiable Looks interesting—and one that I can possibly make fit on the #Nonfiction2025 bingo card… 1w
JenReadsAlot @Amiable Let me know what you think of it. 1w
DogMomIrene I loved this book, especially how the author works in the context of North Korea‘s history. The audiobook performance was great too. 1w

This is a thorough analysis of North Korea‘s history, focused on the time prior to Kim Jong-Un takes power. This was published in 2009, so there have been changes but still a great starting point. Excellent research and reporting using details from defectors. Unbelievable and horrific, the way these people have lived through famine, torture, and repression from their government. Everyone should read this. From my #AuldLangSpine list from @Singout

Singout I‘m glad you liked it! She did amazing work in interviewing over 100 people, but then focussing on the lives of six different ones. 2w

Well, this is disappointing: a book I loved listening to while painting my house but found out some problematic info about the author after finishing it. North Korean defector Yeonmi Park has been accused of fabricating some of this story. I‘m not sure what to believe but this is a book for my deep dive into North Korea. I‘m looking forward to Nothing to Envy next from @Singout ‘s #alspine list. A brutal story of survival. Conflicted pick

JenniferEgnor One of the books I checked out today is a memoir of life under dictatorship in Korea and escape. 2w
Singout Wow. That‘s a really good example of what a complete split there is between political analyses. 2w

Chelsea.Poole @JenniferEgnor what is the title? Have you seen the documentary Beyond Utopia? 2w
Chelsea.Poole @Singout have you read this one? Seeing Nothing to Envy on your list encouraged me to watch Beyond Utopia while waiting to start it in January. I‘ve also read that North Korean troops are being sent to the front lines in Russia, recently, which was news to me. Just feels like I should be paying more attention than I have been. So I thank you for the encouragement. 2w
Singout No, I haven‘t. And yes, North Korean involvement ups the ante even more. It‘s very frightening. 2w
JenniferEgnor @Chelsea.Poole Escape from Camp 14. Have not seen that. 2w
Chelsea.Poole @JenReadsAlot @JenniferEgnor oh are you two doing a buddy read of this? I‘ll add it to my list. There‘s quite a few. 2w
JenReadsAlot We are not! @JenniferEgnor I would be curious what you think! 2w
Kristy_K This is disappointing. I read this years ago and remember enjoying it. Thanks for the article link! (edited) 2w
JenniferEgnor @Chelsea.Poole @JenReadsAlot once I get through my current stack…! 2w
youneverarrived Thanks for the article link - I read it a few years ago and thought it was brilliant. Nothing to Envy was one of my 2024 favourites. 2w

Refreshed my #Roll100 list for 2025. These are the first three books from the list. Each from @Singout ‘s #auldlangspine list…so essentially, I cheated and made my list after I knew the numbers. Forgive me! I‘ll be better in February. 😉

JamieArc Citizen is great, and the author is a lovely person. 3w
Singout All excellent choices! And they‘re each quite different from one another. I hope you enjoy them! 3w

This is a brilliant, Pulitzer prize winning novel about North Korea based on Johnson's research of defectors' accounts and his own visit to the country. It's difficult to read, but well worth it to have a better understanding of how people survive under a ruthless, totalitarian, evil regime that echoes Orwell's 1984. It explores the psychology of a man who does every awful deed he is told to but somehow clings to his humanity.

4⭐️ I quite enjoyed this #bookclub read. For me, it went by quickly, as the chapters were fairly short and straightforward. What I enjoyed the most was the description of life inside of North Korea, due to closed off nature of the country. It was a very intriguing read. #2024 #nonfiction #northkorea #memoir
