Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom (2003)
⭐️⭐️

Premise: A crusty amusement park worker has five transforming encounters when he enters the afterlife.

Review: Stories about the afterlife are generally either cynical or sentimental, so I was expecting a certain amount of cringe here. But wow. ⬇️

Mattsbookaday this is without question the most, un-self-aware, saccharine slop I‘ve ever read. It does have some nice content on grace and forgiveness, but that‘s about the best I can say about it. I remember when this was everywhere; two decades later, I have to ask, WHY?!

Bookish Pair: If you need a healthy dose of afterlife cynicism after this, Here Goes Nothing, by Steve Toltz (2022)

This book is so SO good!! I want to recommend it to everyone! I love how it‘s spelled out. We are here to spread the good news about Jesus. He created every single one of us for his purpose. He wants all of us to join him in Heaven. Have faith, believe in Jesus, accept him into your hearts. What have you to lose?

This is a beautiful collection of poems inspired and influenced by Maya Angelou's faith and love for humanity, and listening to her read them is a joy. Amazing Peace is such a gorgeous, moving poem to listen to at Christmas. (and I have to say, I wasn't expecting eulogies to Luther Vandross and Barry White.)

Miracles Happen | Mary Kay Ash

Only loosely related, but,

Hey, I still have this thing!

Life has been turmoil-ish since my husband passed away almost 7 years ago.

But, as Mary Kay Ash said, miracles happen.

Just wanted to re-introduce myself. Hello world of Litsy!

Glory Days is the first book by Lucado that I read. He is an amazing author with a gift from God to encourage believers based on biblical scripture that we can apply to our daily life. One thing I was able to clearly see was that even in Old Testament times, the battle was spiritual. You can't fight an impossible (not impossible for God) physical battle without fighting the same battle in your mind.
